The existing septic tank is concrete and has not failed at this time. The attached site plan identifies the location of the home as well as the proposed septic location. No conflicts exist between this proposed system and any wells, whether on this lot or adjacent lots. Drainage arrows are shown on the site plan showing the grade and direction of flow. The drainage pattern in general will not be changed by the construction. The test holes placed on the lot indicate silty sandy gravel with some larger cobbles (SM/GM). No groundwater or bedrock was found down to 21’. The percolation rate was determined to be around 9 min/in. An application rate of 0.8 gpd/sf was used in the design of the absorption system. We are proposing to place a deep absorption trench 3 ’ wide x 48’ long x 8’ effective depth. The elevation of the distribution line will be 3’ below the surface for a total depth of 11’. Soil will be mounded 0.5’ above the trench. A minimum of 3’ of fill or 2” of insulation and 2’ of fill will be placed over the absorption trench and 4’ over the septic tank. The ground surface on the lot is mostly flat with only moderate slopes, between 2 to 8% from the front of the lot to the back. There are no steep slopes anywhere on the lot. The new trench will be constructed parallel to the slope as much as possible. It will be a minimum of 100’ from all wells and surface water, and more than 5’ away from the septic tank. The surrounding properties are either undeveloped or have wells greater than 100’ from the property line. The existing set of trenches were built sometime in the past- likely several decades ago, as they have reached failure. There is no record of a permit or inspection reports for these trenches. As part of the required as-builts for this permit, we will also submit as-builts of the existing trenches. Initially, each trench only had a cleanout at the near end of it. We were present when Northern Excavation found and exposed the far end of each trench, adding a cleanout to the lateral and Municipality of Anchorage On-site Water and Wastewater REVIEWED FOR CODE COMPLIANCE OSP181014, Deb Wockenfuss, 02/02/18 installing a monitoring tube in each trench. We can verify the dimensions and the makeup of each trench, along with the calculations showing they are sufficient for a 4-bedroom home. Per our discussion with On-Site about this matter, we will submit an additional permit fee for the additional review time. We are also requesting waivers for these trenches. There is very little information in the municipal files on this property, but the old inspection reports acknowledge that the septic tank is within the 100’ well radius. While the old crib is supposedly outside that radius, these trenches are partially within. The closer trench is 75’ from the well, while the further trench is 87’. Although the trenches appear to have been in operation for many years, the water sample from the well indicates no bacterial contamination and no measurable nitrates. Additionally, the soils found in the test hole were quickly-draining soils with significant presence of sand, indicating that effluent will absorb quickly into the ground and receive adequate filtration from the soils. The ground slopes away from the well at about 5%, decreasing the likelihood of contamination. There is no additional threat to health or safety in allowing those trenches to remain. We are asking that the current minimum separation distance of 75’ be approved. Being now fully documented, these trenches will be left in place and connected to the system with a diverter valve. They will be allowed to recover over the next few years, and can be used again in the future as an alternative to the new trenches. If the system is constructed as designed, it will have no adverse impact: • On the wells in the area or those to be constructed in the future. • On existing septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future. • On reserve space on any lots located in the area. • On drainage patterns in the area. The current drainage pattern will be maintained.
