Subject: HAA for Private Well & Septic System. Lot 15, Timberline S/D.
To whom it may concern:
The subject lot has a 3 bedroom house on it which is served by a private well and septic SYstem.
The results of the field investigation and adequacy tests are summarized as follows:
A. WELL: On the day of my inspection (3/27/97) the static level was 34 feet below the top of
the casing. Water was pumped from the well at an average rate of 6.55 gpm for 100 minutes
(655 gallons). Throughout the pumping period, the water level remained at 37 feet (3 foot
drawdown). At the end of the pumping period the recovery was monitored for 10 minutes,
during which time it recovered completely. Based upon this data it was determined that the
capacity of the well exceeds the Municipal requirements for a 3 bedroom house (450 gallons per
day).
B: SEPTIC TANK: The existing septic tank was installed in October of 1980 (approx. 16.5
years old). According to the M.O.A records, it is 1000 gallons, has two compartments and is
made of steel. No warrantee is made regarding the future life of the septic tank.
C: DRAINFIELD: The drainfield is a single trench that is 3 feet wide, 39 feet long, and has an
effective depth of 5 feet. The elevation difference between the bottom of the sump, and the
cleanout invert (at the beginning of the trench) is only about 1.3 feet. In short, the sump does not
appear to go to the bottom of the drainrock.
Prior to beginning the adequacy test, it was noted that there was approximately 4 inches of
standing water in the clean-out at the beginning of the trench. It was assumed that there was a
blockage, and a pumper was contracted to jet clean the line. Bill McDonald (Old Mc,Donald, s
Pumping) indicated his jet line would not go any further than about 5 feet past the clean-out.
Based upon Mr. McDonald's findings, a contractor (Mike Blakeslee, A+ Home Services) was
retained to correct the problem. Mr. Blakeslee exposed the drainfield in the vicinity of the alleged
blockage, visually inspected the inside of the pipe, and determined there was no obstruction. He
did discover that the west end of the trench is about 4 inches lower than the portion of the
drainpipe that was exposed. This explains the surcharged condition observed in the eleanout.
Although this is not ideal (the drainpipe not level), given the fact that it has operated adequately
for almost 17 years, it is reasonable to assume that the future perforn~ance of the system will not
be impaired. It should be noted that the exposed drainrock looked very clean.
D. SEPTIC SYSTEM ADEQUACY TEST: Prior to beginning the test, the sump was dry.
Water was introduced into the cleanout and sump (alternated) at a rate of 6.55 gpm for a total of
100 minutes (655 gallons). The last 200 gallons of water rose the water level from 2.625 inches
to 5.375 inches (rise of 2.75 inches). This corresponds to 72.7 gallons/inch. During the first 15
minutes of the recovery period, the water level dropped 3.75 inches, indicating an absorption of
272 gallons. Based upon this data, it was determined that the absorption rate of the trench
exceeds 450 gallons per day, as required for a 3 bedroom house.

NOTE: The adequacy of a septic system is influenced by numerous factors, including, but not
limited to, seasonal surface water infiltration, groundwater variations, septic system
maintenance 05'equency of septic tank pumping, usage of biological additives), condition of
drain pipe and pipe joints (which can be damaged by seismic activi(v and deteriorate with age),
(ype of substances deposited in septic system (cigarette butts, sanitary napkins, misc. objects),
and the amount of water being introduced on a continual basis. Consequently, the results of this
adequacy test are only valid for the ,pecific day of the test. Furthermore, because of the limited
nature of this investigation, it is possible that there are hidden defects which may not have been
detected No warrantee is made regarding the fitture performance of this well or septic system

Dear Mr. Travis:
Your request for a waiver(s) of the required 100 foot horizontal
separation of a septic system to the surface water has been
approved. The approved separation distance(s) ar~ the leachfield
to the surface water of 42 feet.
This waiver approval applies to the existing septic system to
surface water separation only. Any future upgrade to the septic
system will require all separation distances be met or another
approval from this department. Should the operation of the
subject wastewater disposal system cause any contamination or
degradation of the subject surface water, this waiver will
become void.

Dear Mr. Roth:

Anschuetz Property
Lot 15, Timberline Subdivision
Municipality of Anchorage
As mentioned in our previous discussions, a small, intermittent drainage traverses the subject property. The
drainage is within 100 feet of the existing septic system drainfield. The approximate location of the drainage
swale or stream with relation to the septic system and other improvements is shown on the attached sketch.
In our opinion, a waiver is not required because the drainage is intermittent. However, the owner is
presently contemplating sale of the property and because of timing, prefers to resolve any doubt at this time.
According to the microfiche records at the On-site Services Office, a 12-foot test boring was completed on
the property for the septic system design. The Icg of this boring indicates that the upper 3-4 feet of soils
consist of silty sand with gravel underlain by sandy gravel to the depth of the boring. The soils rating in the
absorption strata was 125, with the bottom of the system installed to 8-feet below grade. Unconfined ground
water was not observed in the test boring. The presence of the drainage was not indicated in the original
report (1980), or in the report dated 7/30/86 when the system passed an adequacy test. The bottom of the
leach field and the drainage are approximately the same elevation. The ground surface slopes toward the
drainage at approximately 10 degrees. At the closest point, the horizontal separation of the system and
seep is 42 feet. (See sketch.)
The site was visited again on Tuesday, the fourth of May, to take elevations and determine the source and
characterization of the drainage. Present flow in the drainage braids just beyond the Anschuetz property
and percolates into the ground. The flow does not appear to resurface in the immediate vicinity (checked
for approximate 300 yards down slope). The area was also traversed perpendicular to the drainage and was
not found to resurface. The area is dominantly alder vegetation. The water source consists of seeps and
a roadside drainage intercept upgradient from the Anschuetz property. One large seep contributes
approximately half of the stream volume and is about 300-yards from the subject property and just north
of the powerline. Approximate elevations taken with a hand level are shown on the area attached sketch.
To protect the drainage area from any potential impact associated with an overflowing drainfield event, we
propose constructing a small diversion dike between the system and drainage channel. The location of this
proposed diversion is shown on the attached sketch. The upslope terminus is above any area that could
~AGRA
Earth & Environmental Group
Municipality of Anchorage 31-1428

potentially be impacted by an overflow. The downslope terminus has a retention basin to capture any
overland flow. The design, incorporating an impervious liner, will provide a drainage break between the
system and drainage. A cross section of the dike is shown on the enclosed sketch.
We would appreciate your review of this matter, and if acceptable, issuance of a waiver. In the meantime,
if you have any questions, please contact us.
Sincerely,

Request for Waiver
Anschuetz Property
Lot 15, Timberline Subdivision
Dear Mr. Roth:
I inspected the leachfield improvements at the Anschuetz property. Dr. and Mrs. Anschuetz implemented
these modifications to fulfill your requirements for a waiver of the Health Authority Approval Guidelines. This
waiver is required because the absorption field is within the mandated 100-foot separation distance from a
surface drainage.
I enclosed as-built drainages of the new separation berm. This berm will stop any overland leachate from
the septic system from flowing into the drainage. The major difference from what we proposed in our May
10, 1993 letter is that no retention basin was constructed.
Because there is ample vegetation between the berm and the septic system, the lack of a basin will not
affect the performance of our design. The vegetation and berm will still allow the leachate to absorb into
the ground before reaching the drainage.
I believe the berm was adequately constructed. This modification will protect the quality of the area's
surface water. Please issue the waiver for this system.
Sincerely,
RZA AGRA Alaska, Inc.
