Foundation and Soils Report for
Klatt Road and Old Seward Qwik Stop
Gentlemen:
Transmitted herein are the results of our subsurface investJ, ga-
tion and recon~endations for foundation considerations.
The exploration was conducted July 12, 1977. The investiga-
tion consisted of drilling four test holes to a depth of
16.5' and field and laboratory classification of the soil
samples°
The organization of the data is as follows:

CONCLUSIONS
An F-.4 Sandy Silt covers the site to a depth of approxi-
mately two.feet. The underlying material to the depth
of exploration is an NFS Gravelly Sand.
No free water table was discovered in any of the four
test holes.
The surface Sandy Silt is frost susceptible and will
have to be removed from under all proposed improvements
if frost heave damage is to be minimized. The underlying
NFS material will form an adequate subbase for the
development.
Percolation tests were run in the four test holes on
the site. .~n all cases percolation exceeded 1 /mmnu==.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Foundation
Continuous footings and isolated square footings should be a
minimum 14" wide and 18" square respectively. In any case,
the footings should be sized so as not to exceed a soil
bearing value of 5 ksf.
Depth from the surface to the bottom of the footing should
be a minimum of 4' and 2' for exterior and interior footings
respectively.
Insulation
One inch of styrofoam (SB) blue should be used below grade
along the outboard face of all perimeter footing walls.
This is to direct the building heat down to the footing to
keep it thawed, provide a slide plane to absorb vertical
frost heave and provide a resilient surface to absorb horizontal
frost heave. ~
Earthwork
The overlying Sandy Silt, organic material, frozen soils,
and debris should be removed prior to placing any fill
material, mats, slabs, or footings.
Subsequent to excavation and prior to forming the footing,
the existing subbase material should be compacted to a
minimum of 95% with an average of 97% or higher, for minimum
18" in depth.
Surface drainage should be collected and directed away from
the developed areas.
DISCUSSION
The drilling was accomplished by Denali Drilling, Inc.,
employing a "Mobile B-50" drill fitted with both 8" hollow
stem, continuous flight auger and rotary drill. Standard
penetration samples were taken by driving a standard 2" O.D.
split spoon sampler into the soil ahead of the bit through
the hollow stem of the auger by the action of a 140 pound
hammer, free falling a distance of 30". The number of blows
r~quired to drive the sampler each 6" increment is recorded
on the logs.
The on-site NFS Gravelly Sand is adequate for fill material
under footings, slabs and paved section. The gravelly sand
is permeable and has a good percolation rate.

No problems are envisioned with regard to the earthwork on
this project. Care should be taken, however, to remove the
frost susceptible surface layer of Sandy Silt.
We trust the foregoing is sufficient to your needs, though
not necessarily exhaustive of the possibilities. Should
questions arise, or if we can be of further service, please
do not hesitate to contact us.
Very truly yours,
th E. Stroh, P.E.
