Water from a tank truck was dumped into the crib in 100 gallon increments with liquid rise in the crib measured after each increment. When 500 gallons had been added, water began to back up into the septic tank. At that time, addition of water was halted and the septic tank was pumped. Absorption monitoring was carried out for 90 minutes after pumping the septic tank. The resultant plot of absorption vs. time, with the extrapolated daily absorption capacity, is included. RESULTS: The plot of absorption vs. time yielded a daily absorption capacity of 1300 gallons per day. The required absorption capacity for a 4 -bedroom house is 600 gallons per day. The soil absorption system meets Municipality of Anchorage requirements. COMMENTS: The homeowner requested that we measure the distance between the well head and the bordering septic system to the south. That distance is 150 feet to the crib. The septic tank capacity estimated by the pumper was 750- 1000 gallons. There was a large amount of sludge in the tank, which was removed as well as possible, resulting in 750 gallons being pumped. The pumper felt that an additional 100-250 gallons could have remained in the tank. It is recommended that the new owner have the tank pumped again in 2-3 months to remove allremainingsludge. After checking the MOA requirements, it was found that the septic tank size would have :to be increased. The correct procedure for the upgrade consists of adding a 500 gallon tank into the system.
