A water sample revealed a nitrate concentration of 7.13 milligrams per liter (mg/Q.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum
contaminant level (MCL) of 10.0 mg/L for public drinking water systems. While
private wells are not subject to this regulation, EPA standards are based on existing
health information and can therefore be used to gauge the relative quality of water
from private wells. Please see the attached "Nitrate Fact Sheet" for important
information regarding nitrate.
This advisory must be attached to all copies of the subject Certificate of On -Site

Honse water use was kept at a minimum on 12-15-87, prior to
the adequacy test, which was started at 11:30 A.M. Water
from a tank truck was dumped into the pit in 100 gallon
increments with liquid rise in thc pit measures after each
increment. Initial water depth in the pit was 18". Depth
increase per 100 gallons averaged 4". A total of 1100 gallons
were input into the system.
The calculated rate of rise in the pit was 588 gallons per
foot.

RESULTS:
COMMENTS:
Absorption monitoring was carried out at 10 minute intervals
for 90 minutes after pumping the septic tank. After 90
minutes, the system had absorbed 200 gallons.
The plot of absorption vs. time yielded a daily absorption
capacity of 550 gallons per day. The required absorption
capacity for a 3-bedroom house is 450 gallons per day. The
soil absorption system meets Municipality of Anchorage
requirements.
The standpipe on the seepage pit bad shifted from its original
location at about four feet below ground level. It is
recommended that this be repaired during Summer 1988.
The standpipe on the septic tank had a restriction where it
enters the tank, necessitating the use of' a 2" diameter hose
to pump the tank. It is recommended that this be repaired
during Summer, 1988.
The absorption system is very deep because it has had
approximately 10 feet of fill placed over it since initial
construction.

RESULTS:
Following determination of initial water depth using a well
probe, water was turned on at a hose bibb and let run at full
blast. Water level was monitored in the well at 10 minute
intervals. Pressure in the 42 gallon pressure tank was also
monitored. After 70 minutes, water was turned down to
approximately I/2 gallon per minute flow rate and let run for
a total of four hours.
During the 90 minute full blast run, the well produced a
steady yield of 6-2/3 gpm. During that time water level iu
the well dropped 2 feet and stabilized. The pump produced a
steady pressure of 30 psi during the initial phase of the test.
During the remainder of the test, the well level increased
approximately 2 feet and stabilized. The pump and pressure
tank system cycled properly.

RESULTS: Over the course of the entire test, the well produced about
(Cont'd.) 675 gallons. 450 gallons per day are required by the MOA.
Thc well meets flow requirements.
COMMENTS:
Due to the excessive amount of snowfall, it was difficult to
determine actual casing height stick-up above ground. Stick-
up appears to be less than 12", more like 8". If casing height
is less than 12", it should be extended.
The well did have a sanitary seal, and all wiring was in
conduit, ltowever, the saaitary seal was old and loose, and
should be replaced.
It was difficult to determine if the well was located in a
depression, although it did not appear to be.
Well to septic tank standpipe separation was 72'.
Well to seepage pit standpipe was 91'.
Nitrate and coliform analysis results are attached.

Subject: Waiver Request for Tract B2A Tengberg Subdivision
Waiver Number WR87-079
Dear Mr. Hawley:
Your waiver request for the subject lot has been approved. The
required iL00 foot separation between a residential absorption
field and private well has been waived to 80 feet.
As a result of the very detailed waiver study performed, it was
determined that the water table gradient slopes from the well
towards the absorption field. This was a large factor in the
approval of this waiver.
Our records indicate that the high nitrate level in the well
water is an area wide condition. In my opinion this well to
absorption field separation is not impacting this condition
further.
This waiver approval is for the existing septic system/well
separation only. Any future upgrade of either will require all
separation distances be met or another waiver approval from
this department.
Sincerely,
civil Engineer

Request for Separation Distance Waiver Between Well and Seepage Pit
Site History
The above described property is a 2-1/2 acre parcel located at the top
of Huffman Ridge on Hillside Drive. The address is 12100 Hillside Drive.
The septic system consists of a 1000 gallon concrete "Espinosa" septic
tank, and a log crib seepage pit. It was constructed by the original
Owner, and inspected by the GAAB on November 19, 1971.
The well was drilled between Nov. 17, 1971 and April, 1973. Well depth
is 44 feet, cased to the bottom with no perforations, and static water
level is 31.5 feet.
Both the well and septic were reapproved by the GAAB on 4-5-73 for
the purpose of obtaining a home loan to replace a mobile home which
was previously on the property.
On Sept. 3, 1980 the absorption system was tested for adequacy by
Alaska Environmental Control Services. It was determined to be capable
of accepting 600 gallons per day.
On December 15, 1987, Arctic Engineers, Inc. tested both the well and
septic systems and found them to be operationally adequate.
When originally constructed, the well was placed 72 feet away from the
septic tank cleanout and 91 feet from the absorption system standpipe.
This places the well approximately 70 feet from the nearest edge of the
septic tank, and 90 feet from the nearest edge of the seepage pit. No
snrrounding systems are within a 100 foot radius of either the subject
well or septic system.

Well logs and soils logs, where available, for this property and
surrounding properties were obtained from DHHS. Only a soils log was
found for this tract, well and soils logs were found for lots in Hillside
View, Chickadee Slopes, Breitzman, and Alpine Terrace Subdivisions.
This information is summarized and attached as Appendix A.
Dave Harper, of Alpine Drilling, was hired to determine well depth.
casing depth, and whether or not the casing was perforated. Well depth
and casing depth were found to be 44' B.G.L., and the casing was nor
perforated.
The 11/19/71 GAAB Inspection Report (in Appendix B), a
topo plat by J.L.S. Surveys (Figure 1) and field measurements
to determine horizontal locations of system components.
preliminary
were used
A cross section of thc straight line distance between the well and
seepage pit was drawn, using known and assumed information. This is
attached as Figure 2.
The information was assimilated, and conclusions were drawn in re'der to
evaluate the feasibility of obtaining a waiver. The State of Alaska
Waiver Guidelines (1-3-85) were used to evaluate feasibility.
Conclusions
Water Table
Static water level in the well on Tract B2A was measured at 31.5'
B.G.L. Maximum drawdown was measured at 33.5' B.G.L. Review of
surrounding well logs indicated that where gravel overlies bedrock.
it is typically water bearing. It was assumed that this well draws
from that aquifer, and that the casing terminated at or near
bedrock surface. Further review of surrounding well logs indicated
that bedrock depth is typically about 40' B.G.L. General knowledge
and Figure I led to the conclusion that ground surface slope in the
area if generally from east to west, and is roughly 10%. It follows
that bedrock dips similarly at about 10% from east to west.
Thc depth of the bottom of the seepage pit was measured and
found to be 20' B.G.L. Plotting of this on Figure 2 revealed that
the lowest part of the septic system was approximately 17' above
static water level.

Thus, we attributed 2 points to this category from the ADEC
guidelines.
Soil Sorption
Review of well logs and soil logs (see Appendix A) indicated that
soils were predominantly sands, silty sandy gravels, and layers of
hardpao/ silt/clay.
We assumed a sand with clay for a representative soil stratum.
From the ADEC guidelines, we assigned 2.5 points in this category.
Permeability
Again, review of well and soils logs led us to assume a permeability
of sand with clay.
From the ADEC guidelines, we assigned 1.25 points in this category.
Water Table Gradient
Based upon the summary given under the heading "Water Table" and
the plotted information on Figure 2, we assumed a water table
gradient of +10%
We assigned 6.0 points to this category.
Horizontal Separation
Using the original inspection report (see Appendix B), field
measurements, and our best judgement, we assumed a separation
distance of 80 feet from the seepage pit to thc well.
We assigned 2 points to this category.
Results
The total point value we developed was 13.75. We feel that
bacterial contamination of this well by this seepage pit is unlikely.
Separation distances to surrounding systems are satisfactory.
We recommend that a separation distance waiver be granted for
this particular case.
