Waiver request — well to septic tank
Dear On -Site Services Engineer:
At the time of installation for this system the contractor was concerned about the separation
distance to the well and used GPS location tools to confirm that the tank was outside the 100' well
radius. However, once the stamped survey was completed, we found out that the GPS was not as
accurate as expected and that the edge of the tank is approximately 94' from the center of the well.
The septic tank is on the other side of the home from the well. Grade slopes down from the house
toward the septic system to the northeast. There is no possibility of effluent running out of the tank
and contaminating the well head. Any overflow of effluent would flow away from the well toward
the septic trenches. The design of the trenches, with 2' of filter sand, adds additional treatment
before the effluent flows downward into the actual receiving soils. Also, although there is no well
log available, the previous test hole information shows sands and silts below 10-16', which will
also provide significant additional treatment before any possibility of reaching the well
underground. All of this additional treatment would offset the 6' less separation.
In our judgment, there is no threat of contamination of the well head due to the slightly closer
location of the septic tank. For this reason, we request a waiver be issued for the 94' separation to
the well.

2. All requirements specified in Anchorage Municipal code Chapters 15.55 and 15.65 and the State of Alaska
Wastewater Disposal Regulations (18AAC72) and Drinking Water Regulations (18AAC80)

Septic system design
Dear On-Site Services Engineer:
The septic system on the above lot has failed, so we are submitting this permit application for the
construction of a new one. The attached site plan identifies the location of the home as well as the
existing well, septic location. The owner currently has a 4-bedroom system, but has asked for a 5-
bedroom replacement.
The ground surface on the lot slopes toward the road moderately around the home, but where the
test holes were dug the ground flattens out to 1-5% slopes. There are no slopes greater than 25%
within 50 feet downslope of either the primary or alternate site. Contours are shown on the site
plan showing the grade and direction of flow. Stormwater drainage will not impact this septic
system. The new trenches will be constructed parallel to the slope as much as possible.
Wells on this and adjacent lots are shown. The new system will be a minimum of 100’ from all
wells and surface water, and more than 5’ away from the septic tank. Please refer to the attached
test hole logs, plan and profile pages for the septic design. If this design is followed, there will be
no adverse impacts to adjacent properties.

Dear Mr. Holland:
We are submitting herewith the test boring results and our comments
regarding soil conditions encountered at the subject site. This
investigation was performed in accordance with your request of May 6,
1974, and those procedures outlined in a letter dated September 13,
197i by Mr. Roll Strickland of the Greater Anchorage Area Borough
Department of Environmental Quality.
A single test hole was put down within the Tract B-1 area for the
purpose of defining genera], subsurface soil conditions for the proposed
.sanitary system. Excavation was accomplished with a tractor-mounted
backhoe and the testhole was extended to a total depth of 16.0 feet
below ground surface. The final log.prepared for the test hole has
been included in Drawing A-01.
Ground water was not encountered in the test hole.
