Proposed Septic System Upgrade
To Whom It May Concern:
Attached please find the application and supporting documentation to upgrade the
septic system for the referenced 3 bedroom house. The original septic system was
installed in 1981, and the drainfield is now surcharged. It is proposed to retain the old
drainfield and abandon the septic tank in place.
The proposed design is based upon a test hole dug on February 7, 2006. The hole was
dug to 18 ft with no water encountered. After a 7 day monitoring period, no water was
detected. The proposed shallow trench drainfield will be installed in a silty sand layer
between 2.5 ft and 5.5 ft. A percolation test between 3.5 ft and 4 ft resulted in a rate of
12 minutes per inch. The underlying silt layer had a percolation rate of 80 minutes per
inch. An application rate of 0.8 gpd/ft' is used in the design. The soil log is attached.

There are no surface waters or private wells within 100 ft of the proposed septic system.
There are no slope concerns.
A lot line waiver is requested for the old drainfield, to 0.1 ft from the north lot line. The
drainfield was installed in 1981.
I am not aware of any adverse effect that this upgrade or the lot line waiver would have
on any adjacent properties' water and wastewater treatment needs.

Dear Jeff,
On behalf of the owners of the subject property, I am applying for a conditional
Certificate of Onsite Approval for the existing 3 bedroom house. A permit
application has been submitted to upgrade the septic system. The COSA
checklist and water samples are attached.
The proposed septic upgrade is based upon a test hole dug on February 7, 2006.
The drainfield will be installed in a stratum between 2.5 ft and 3.5 ft. I request
approval to install the septic system in the spring due to frost concerns. When the
test hole was dug, there was frost down to about 2.5 ft. I am concerned that the
stratum adjacent to the sewer rock could currently be frozen.
The current septic system is functioning marginally. There is no evidence of
sewage surfacing, although the drainfield is surcharged. I do not believe that
delaying the installation of the septic system would cause any risk to human health
or the environment. The new homeowner will need to be cautious to avoid
overloading the system.
Three bids have been obtained to install the septic system. The high bid is
$14,920. Funds in the amount of 150% of this high bid will be put in escrow at
closing for septic system installation. The installation will be performed as soon as
possible in the spring, and prior to June 15, 2006.
