SPECIFICATIONS FOR SEPTIC SYSTEM INSTALLATION

1.0 GENERAL
1. 1 Owner is Mary and Mark Sells. P.O. Box 200391,~ Anchor-

1,,2 Engineer is the perlsor') or entity hired by the Owner to
inspect this project. The Engineer must be recognized by the
Municipality o¥ Amchorage~ Department ef Health and Human
Services.
1.3 Contractar is the person or entity hired by the Owner
to install this project. The Contractor must be recognized
by the Municipality of Anchorage~ Department of Health and
Human Services. If Owner desires to install the system
himse].f~ O~ner Installed~ he must obtain permission te de se
from t. he Department of Health and Human Services. Contact
the Department for permission requirements. Phone 343-4744~
1.4 The Drawings, sheets 1 through 3, shall be part of this
speci fication.
1.5 All materia].s and workmanship shall meet the require-
ments of the Municipality of Anchorage~ Department of Health
and Human Services~ the conditions of the permit~ and all
applicable rules and regu].ations currently in effect.
1.6 Ali, excavatiorl depths are advisory~ and are to) be
verified a~;d may be modified in the field by the Engineer.
1.7 It is the respensibility of the Owner or the Contractor
to adhere to the approved design~ to verify that the speci-
fied separation distances are met~ and that the required
inspections are performed.
1.8 The Contractor rjr the Owner shall report to the Engi-
neer any observed condition which would put the septic
system in violat:i~n of State or Municipal regulations,,
2.0 SEPTIC TANK
2.1 I~F there is an existing septic tanl<~ it may be used if
it meets the capacity requirement for the residence. The
tank shall be inspected by the Engineer~ and its water'

tightness and structural integrity shall be verified,.
2.2 A inew septic: tank slnall be one ~abric:ated by eitlner

The septic tank shall be a UPC-approved two-compartment
tank,, constructed e.~ 12 ~auge~ or better~ steel with bitu
mastic coating. The tank shall be set level on undisturbed

2.3 The septic tank shall be ins'hailed a minimum of {ive
-Eeet from the house foundation and a minimum o-E five '~eet
'~rom the absorption area.
2.4 -Fine septic tank sinai], be a minimum of 100 ~eet from any
well serving a singIe residence; 100 feet Yrom any body
water., creeks or- drainage ditches with ~lowing water-; 150
~eet from [)lass "C" wells., and 200 feet ~rom Class A or
Class B wells.
2.5 All pipe connections te tine tank shalI be mechanical
watertight calder couplings. Cleanouts shall be installed
as clesignated and capped with air'--ti~:~lnt rain caps. Clean-
outs shall extend a minimum o'F 12 inches abeve ~inal ground
elevation. Provisions sinai], be made for landscaping and

ABSORPTION FIELD
3. 1 Gravel used in the absorption field shall be 0.5 to 2.5
inch screened roc::I::~ with less than 3% passing the No. 200
3.2 Sand~ used fer leveling or fer ~iltering~ shall have an
e'~¥ective grain size between bio,, 40 sieve and No. 18 sieve.
Uniformity coefficient shall be less than 4. Not more tJnan

4.0 INSTALLATION
4. 1 Locate ali, underground util ities.~ property lines~
future driveways~ existing or proposed ~ater wells~ water
ways,~ surface and sob surface drainage ~cilities~ lakes~
ponds, and all ~ther facilities requiring separation dis-
tances from the proposed septic system,. Notify Owner or
Enginemr o~ any observed possible conflict.
4.2 Stake alignment o.~ system wi th markers showing the
protective distances from wells and water bodies.
4.3 Establish an elevation benchmark. This BM shall be
easily identi;~iable~ stable and permanent. An arbitrary
elevation of 10(I can be assigned.
4..4 lc. stall the t. ank as shown on the drawings. Record the
inlet and outlet elevations of the tank~ Tank shall be
placed on undisturbed rlabive soil.
4.5 Excavate the absorption field,. Bottom of excavation
shall be level and scarified. If sidewalls smear's~ they
shall also be scarified. Record elevation o'~ beginning~
middle and end of trench. Record elevation o~ each corner
and center point o~ bed. Construction equipment shall not
operate on the floor e~ the excavat:i, on. Any material com-
pacted by the operation o~ the construction equipment shall
removed and replaced with uncompacted materials.
4~6 Place the rock to the depth specified~ Do not contami
hate rock with native materials or spoils from the excava-
tion,, Level the rock surface (+- 1") before installing the
perf c)rated pipe.

5.0 INSPECTIONS
5~ 1 A minimum of three inspections are required, ]'he
first inspection will be of the open excavation, At this
time the sell conditiens will be observed and compared to
the design assumptions, Ground water conditions or presence
