Ref: Proposed Septic System Upgrade for US Survey 3201; Lot 24 T10N R1W Section 9/10
To whom it may concern:
The existing 4 -bedroom house is served by a private well and an IDSF type drainfield. Per
conversations with the owner, the drainfield is in a state of failure and must be upgraded. The
homeowner would like to upgrade to a 5 -bedroom system. In addition, the existing 1500 -gallon
STEP tank is steel and installed in 1998. Per MOA code requirements, a septic tank over 10
years old must be physically inspected during the drainfield upgrade. Based upon this fact, we
are proposing to decommission the existing 1500 -gallon steel STEP tank per UPC and install a
new 1500 -gallon HDPE Greer tank, followed by a 1000 -gallon HDPE Greer tank with IDSF
components and rebuild the existing IDSF by excavating out all contaminated material and
importing MOA approved sand as needed to rebuild the IDSF in place at an elevation of 0.1'
higher. It should be noted that the extended portion of the IDSF (to increase to 5 bedrooms), will
have a minimum of 2 feet of MOA approved filter sand. Please see attached design drawings for
other MOA requirements.
We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic

Ref: Proposed Well and Septic Design for Lot 24, US Survey 3201 (Bird Creek)
To whom it may concern:
The referenced property is currently undeveloped. The owner is planning to construct a 4
bedroom house on the site. Comments regarding the proposed well and soptic .desiagn are
summarized as follow, s:
WELL: The proposed well is to be located near the north corner of the hOUse.
SOILS: On June 21, 1998, two test holes were excavated and percolation tests performed.
Below the organics in both test holes, the soil is a SM material to adepthof 3-3~5 tYeet. At 3-3.5
feet, the soil transitions to a ML/GM-SM material to a depth of 14 feet (bottom of test holes).
Two percolation test were performed in each test hole. The percolation rate in the upper bench of
TH#l, between 4 feet and 4.5 feet, was 24 minute/inch. The percolation rate in,the lower bench of
TH#l, between 6.25 feet and 6.75 feet, was 96 minute/inch. The percolation rate in the upper
bench of TH#2, between 4 feet and 4.5 feet, was 80 minute/inch. The percolation rate in the lower
bench of TH#2, between 6.25 feet and 6.75 feet, was 53 minute/inch.
SEPTIC DESIGN: Cfiven the aforementioned soil conditions, a conventional mound system
would be extremely large and a shallow trench would be excessively long. Neither would fit in
the 30 radius of TH #1. Due to the past performance of these type of systems, and the cost/size,
we are proposing to install a bottomless Intermittent Sand Filter (ISF) which, ideally, will cost
less and have a longer useful life. The following is the design criteria for the primary system.
a. Percolation Rate: 24 minutes/inch (4.0 to 4.5 foot del~th)
b. Allowable Application Rate for ISF: 2 gallons/day/ft~
c. Number of Bedrooms: 4
d. Design Flow: 60Ogall0nsper day
e. Minimum Absorption Area: 300 fi2
£ Effective Depth below pressure pipes: 2.5+inches
g. Width: I0 feet
h. Length: 36 feet.
i. Effective absorption area = 360 ft2 (>300 t52 OK)
j. Air Supply: Thomas Industries, Model 5070, "Anchorage Tank".
k. Air Supply Line: "Wasteflow" emittefline, 1/2 inch I.D, "Anchorage Tank".
1. Sand Material: Central Paving Products "Winter Road Sand"
m. Pea Gravel: 100% passing 3/8" sieve, less than 20% passing the 1/4" sieve, and
less than 1% passing the #8 sieve.
We are proposing to excavate down to a depth of 3 feet (maximum), place a minimum of 2 feet of
sand, and install the air supply line 18 inches below the top of the sand. On top of the sand, 6
inches of 3/8 inch pea gravel will be placed, with the pressure laterals midway in the stratum. A
conventional 1i15 station (Anchorage Tank), equipped with a programmable timer, will be utilized
so that flow can be intermittently dosed to the ISF.
SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic
system.
TOPOGRAPHY: There are no slope concerns.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES: The materials used, and the
construction practices will comply with DHHS' "Intermittent Sand Filter Design, Installation &
Maintenance Manual". The contractor should read this document prior to construction. Copies
are available at the Municipal Onsite Services office (5th floor, 9th & L St.).
CLOSING: Given the site restriction, We think the ISF is the most viable option for this lot,
short of install a Recirculating Upflow Filter, which would be more expensive. We are open to
any suggestions from your department, which would be an improvement to the proposed design.
We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic
