The property currently has a duplex on it, with a private well, a 1250-gal concrete septic tank, and a small lift station pumping the effluent up to the existing bed. We are submitting this application for the construction of a new septic system. The attached site plan shows the location of the existing home, well, and septic system, along with any wells on adjacent properties that impact this property. The test hole dug on this lot indicates an upper layer of organics over 1' of clayish material,with very sandy in-situ soils below that. No bedrock was found down to 14', while groundwater was found at 10', after the 7-day monitoring period. The percolation rate was under 1 min/in. We are submitting lab results for these soils showing that they are classified as sand (SP), and request to use these in-situ soils as a sand filter for the fast percolation rate, instead of bringing in filter sand from the municipality.The in-situ soils fill the same function as filter sand, so there is no threat of contamination in granting this request. Using a 1.0 GPD/SF application rate,our design is for two 39' shallow trenches, 5' wide with 2.5' effective depth. The flow line elevation is at 2.5' below existing grade, for a total depth of 5.0. This maintains 5' above the groundwater levels measured in November, 1 month from the seasonal high groundwater levels. Ground will be mounded up 1' above the trenches,for a total of 3' cover, with the option of using insulation and 2' of cover. No conflicts exist between the proposed system and any wells,on this lot or adjacent lots.The new set of trenches will be built in the area of the existing bed, so that bed will need to be decommissioned and the contaminated soils removed. The ground surface on this property is nearly completely flat, sloping less than 1%in any direction.The trenches will be placed as much as possible parallel to the ground slope contours.They will be more than 100' away from any well, and greater than 5' from the septic tank. The existing pump station will need to be replaced. Currently, it consists of a small sump pump in a small concrete culvert, without any high-level alarms. Additionally, the septic tank is currently under the driveway, and we do not have the details about the tank construction to verify the structural integrity.Therefore,a new 1250-gallon combination STEP tank will need to be installed outside of the driveway. This STEP tank will require a high-level alarm to be installed inside the home. If the system is constructed as designed, it will have no adverse impact: • On the wells in the area or those to be constructed in the future. • On existing septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future. • On reserve space on any lots located in the area. • On drainage patterns in the area. The current drainage pattern will be maintained. The septic tank was pumped and verified to have a capacity in excess of 1250 gallons. The absorption trench was tested by a continuous flow of 620 gallons of water over a period of 24 hours. Since there was no cleanout between the septic tank and the absorption trench and no sump at the end of the trench, the water was added and monitored through the septic tank. After a period of 24 hours the water level in the septic tank raised approximately three inches while at the same time water appeared to be backing up in the water closet in the basement apartment. The occupant of the basement apartment (who has lived there approximatley three weeks) indicated that they have had continuous problems with water backing up in the water closet. The occupants of the upstairs apartment indicated that the people downstairs had had problems for over a year. It seemed to her that most of the problem was created during the time when the laundry facilities were in service. It is difficult to determine if the problems are directly attributed to the absorption system or to faulty plumbing within the house. However, when the septic tank was pumped, approximately 600 gallons of water ran back into the tank from the trench system. I regret to inform you that I can only conclude that the system is not functioning adequately at this time. If we may be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call. ,~TRf,~BERT A.
