This in- v~a~igation was performed in accordance with your request of March 21, 1977 and those procedures outlined in a letter dated July 15, 1975, by ~tr. Rolf Strickland of the Municipality of Anchorage, Department of Environmental Quality. A single test hole was put down within the subject site area for the purpose of defining genera], subsurface soil conditions for the proposed sanitary system. Excavation was accomplished with an auger type drilling rig and the test hole was extended to a total depth of 19 feet below ground surface. The final log prepared for the test hole has been included in Drawing A-01. Groundwater was not encountered in the test hole while drilling. A percolation test was attempted in order to determine the percolation rate of the sandy silt encountered throughout the depth of the test hole. It was found, though, that after pouring approximately ].50 gallons of water into the test hole, the water was percolating into the soil at the same rate that it was being added (approximately 6-8 gallons per minute). This suggests that there may be a permeable layer of well graded sands and gravels near the bottom of %he test hole which was not detected during drilling. Because of the conflict between the percolation rate observed and the expected percolation rate of the soils encouhtered, it is recommended that a qualified geotechnical engineer be at the subject site when the leaching field is being excavated in order to determine the most suitable depth for leaching pipe burial.
