The test holes were logged and the drilling supervised by Mr. Pete Herstek, staff technician with Alaska Testlab. The locations of the test holes are sketched on the attached Figure 1. Table A is the logs of the test holes drilled. Standard explanatory information is contained in the back of this report and should prove helpful in interpretting the data contained on the test hole logs. The test holes drilled on Lots 22 and 23 showed permeable material that should accept a septic tank/seepage system. Classification of the soils was by visual means. Both holes were percolated~ After having been'saturated overnight, the test hole on lot 22 percolated at a rate of 2.1 minutes per inch, while the test hole on lot 23 percolated at a rate of 3.1 minutes per inch. These rates were maintained for 60 minutes. Utilizing the data published in Table A "Area Requirements for Individua]i~ Residences" on page 8, 6f the "Manual of Septic Tank Practice", published by the U.S. Department of Health, Edt~cation & Welfare, the absorption of the area requirements for seepage pits placed on these two lots are 90 square feet per bedroom and ]05 square feet per bedroom respectively. Mr. Carl Pruett -2- September 22, 1975 Lot 25 proved somcwhat more difficult. As can be noted from the test hole log, a sandy silt exists to about 12 feet and from 12 to 15 feet is a gravelly silty sand, with the water table being at <~3.0) feets The percolation rate for the entire hole was ~0 minutes per inch, for an absorption area requirement of 85 sq.ft./b~edroom. This probably reflects a rather strong weighting of the material from 12 to 15 feet, which cannot be utilized because of the presence of the water table. As you may recall, a test was performed on the adjacent lot 26 where the silt, similar to that detected in lot 25, was percolated. The absorption area rating for that silt was 250 sq.ft, per bedroom. Recalling that the Municipality of Anchorage, Dept. of Environmental Quality is.coming out with a new regulation effective October 1, 1975 that will require package treatment plants on all lots under an 1.25 acre where the absorption area rating is 150 sq.ft./bedroom or more, wound indicate that a package plant will be required on lot 25. On lot 24 a different problem exists. There is a drainage channel that runs down along the west boundary of lot 24, through the north end of the lot and on back to the north. Due to heavy rains of this fall, quite a bit of water is presently running in this ditch where it was dry last summer. The area all over lot 24 is quite wet and the ground surface saturated. We drilled three separate test ho]es on lot 24, Hole A, Hole B, and Hole C, attempting to find an area where surface intrusion would not enter the hole. We were unsuccessf~ though Hole C was the 1pest of the three. Consequently we were unable to run a percolation test on that lot. Therefore, instead of relying on visual classification of the soils to indicate their permeability, the soil samples taken from the three te~t holes were classified by laboratory means. There is a layer of silty gravelly sand from 4.5 to 9 feet in test hole C that should percolate well and would be able to accept the affluent from a septic tank or package treatment plant. The Anchorage Dept. of Environmental Quality may require a ~x package treatment plant and a chlorinator, with an absorption · pit or seepage pit, placed in the area of test hole C, for ~lot 24. A great deal of the water problems experienced on Ich 24 are probably unique to this summer, due to the heavy runoff associated with the rains we have had this fall. Mr. Carl Pruett -3- Sei){:ember 22, 1975 It should be noted that all of the water levels listed Jn the test hole logs were for the date of exploration only, and are subject to fluctuation with seasonal and climatic changes. We hope this data is adequate for your present needs. If there are any questions that we can answer or clarifications that we may make, please do not hesitate to contact us.
