Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519 Subject: Lot 31 Block 4 Valli Vue Subdivision Emergency Septic Upgrade Request Gentlemen: My firm was contacted to investigate a failed septic system on the referenced lot. Upon our arrival, effluent was spilling onto the ground surface from the septic trench. A-plus home service was contacted to pump the system dry. The tank clean-outs were not able to be located. A single test hole was excavated on April 22, 1998. The soil report and percolation test results am attached. Ground water was monitored for seven days. No ground water was encountered or monitored. No bedrock was encountered in the test hole. The lot is approximately 0.75 acres in size. Lot 31 slopes to the northeast at a rate of approximately 2 to 10 percent The proposed installation will be located on the northeastern portion of the lot. The proposed location will be greater than 200 feet away from the community well serving this property and 25 feet from the water service lines. The surrounding systems are located greater than 50 feet from the proposed installation. The proposed installation shall not impact the future development of the surrounding or existing lots. See attached design. The new system will maintain over six feet vertical separation to the bedrock, over four feet vertically to the ground water and over 100 feet to surface water. To install this system to meet the above requirements, I request a lot tine waiver of five feet to the north lot line. The test hole was placed with a truck mounted Mobile Drill B-50N drill rig owned and operated by Denali Drilling, Inc. The test hole was logged and the drilling supervised by Mr. O.M. Hatch, senior technician/ staff geologist with our firm. The soils encountered were fairly marginal with the better soils beginning about 14' The test hole was drilled to 20' to determine that enough of the layer was above any water table, that might exist,.to be fully utilized. No water table was observed within the full 20 foot depth of the test hole. The hole was initially filled with water mt:~:J5 p.m. on August 14, 1975. It was allowed to percolate and refilled again at 9:00 a.m. on August 15, 1975 and monitored closely until 1:00 p.m. that same afternoon. The average percola- tion rate during this time was 7.5 minutes per inch. Utilizing, Figure 3-- "Absorption Area Requirements for Private Residence" on Page 9 of the "Manual of Septic Tank PTactice", published by the U.S. Department of Health, Education, & Welfare a percolation rate of 7.5 minutes per inch requires 145 square feet per bedroom of absorption area. The following table represents the level of the liquid in the gravel filter below the leachfield. The depth of liquid in the filter was initially 12.2 feet below the top of the stand pipe. For the test, the liquid level was measured from the top of the stand pipe. The meter had previously been calibrated by R & M Consultants, Inc. Since the house on the lot concerned was occupied, it can be assumed that the leachfield in question was at its normal degree of saturation. If it is assumed that the existing four bedroom residence will house eight people, the average daily load on the disposal system can be expected to be 600 gallons per day, or 0.42 gpm.
