Dear Sks:
The purpose of this letter is to provide the required design narrative in support of our application for a
permit to install a wastewater disposal system to serve a planned 4 bedroom residence on Lot 12, Block 5,
Valli Vue Estates g2. Soils logs and design drawings are enclosed. The test hole locations and proposed
configuration of the original and replacement systems are shown on the site plan.
The soil absorption bed design is based on the measured perc rate of 3 minutes per inch, for wh{ch the
wastewater ordinance specifies a design absorption rate of 0.8 gpm/day. Since a 4 bedroom residence can
be expected to generate 4 x 150 = 600 gal.day of effluent, the required bed area is 600/0.8 = 750 square
feet. This area can best be accomplished by a bed having dimensions of 20' x 37.5'.
The lot is characterized by very irregular topography. The most feasible site for a soil absorption
system is in the bottom of a deep swale just south of the proposed building site. Additional sites may be
possible near the south end of the lot, but these would entail the use of a lift station and a long pressure
line. Based on the soil test data, we were able m identify sufficient area in the swale for both the original
and one replacement soil absorption bed. To best fit the systems within the confines of the swale, we have
elected to use a bed width of 20 feet, instead of the 15 feet stipulated in the ordinance.
The proposed site is in a depression surrounded on three sides by steep slopes of up to 40%. We
monitored this site on several occasions during breakup, and determined that no surface water collected in
the bottom. Nevertheless, to provide additional protection in our design, we have incorporated an
impervious battier pm~t way down in the cover material to divert surface moisture away from the proposed
bed. We have also specified that the fmal grading shall achieve a positive slope down out of the swale to
the west.
Valli Vue S)D]s served by a community water system, for which the well is more than 200 feet from
the proposed project. Private wells on the lots to the north are more than 100 feet from the proposed
system. No other wastewater disposal systems m'e within 100 feet. The proposed project will have no
impact on wells or wastewater disposal systems on adjacent properties, nor will it have any impact on
reserved space/surface and subsurface, or on drainage patterns.
Sincerely,
Ted Moore, P.E.

Wastewater disposal system installation
Specifications
1.0 General:
1.1 The scope of the project includes the installation of a 1250 gallon septic tank followed by a 20'
wide x 37.5 foot long soil absorption bed.
1.2 Construction shall be as depicted on the approved site plan and design drawings. Minor
deviations from these drawings may be allowed or required by the engineer conducting the inspections.
All construction procedures and material specifications shall conform with Municipal and State
requirements..
1.3 All separation distances shall be in confmxnance with Municipal requirements, unless specifically
waived.
2.0 Septic Tank:
2.1 The 1250 gallon septic tank shall be Municipally approved with a minimum of two compartments,
and shall be set level on undisturbed soil. Each compartment shall be equipped with a watertight manhole
cover and a 4" cleanout. If the tank is buried less than 4 feet, it shall be insulated with 2 inches of
approved burial type, rigid insulation.
2.2 All pipe connections to the tank shall be equipped with waterproof mechanical couplings. The
waste line from the residence to the septic tank shall have a minimum slope of 1/4'" per foot, and the waste
fine between the tank and the soil absorption system shall have a minimum slope of 1/8" per foot. A
cleanout shall be installed within 5 feet of the building foundation, and a double cleanout shall be installed
within 5 feet downstream of the septic tank.
3.0 Soil absorption system:
3.1 The soil absorption system shall be constructed by removing the sm~face soils from the proposed
20' x 37.5' bed ar6a to a depth of approximately 7 feet below ground level to expose the native gravelly
sand material.
3.2 The bottom of the soil absorption bed shall be level,. To achieve this it may be necessary to over-
excavate some areas to remove the surficial soils, and to fill these areas with gravelly sand from other
portions of the bed where the sand is encountered at a shallower depth. Any sand imported for leveling
shall comply with Municipal specifications.
3.3 A total of 12 inches of sewer gravel shall be placed in the bottom of the excavation to create the
soil absorption bed. Sewer gravel shall be 0.5" - 2.5" screened gravel, with less than 3% passing the
#200 sieve.
3.4 Perforated and non-perforated distribution pipes shall be configured as shown on the design
drawings. The distribution pipes shall be laid level, with the bottom of the pipes no less than 6 inches
above the bottom of the sewer gravel.
3.5 Monitor tubes and cleanout pipes shall be of 4" diameter and installed in the locations shown on
the design drawings. The portion of the monitor tube extending through the sewer gravel shall be
perforated.
3.6 Approved filter fabric shall be placed over the entire top surface of the sewer gravel before backfill
with inorganic soil.
3.7 When the bed has been backfilled to within approximately 2 feet of the final ground surface, the
surface of the backfill shall be carefully graded to achieve a 5% slope down towards the outlet of the
natural swale in which the bed is constructed. This same graded slope shall be maintained for at least 5
feet beyond the perimeter of the bed in all directions. A single sheet of 10 mil reinforced visquene shall
then be placed covering this entire graded slope to provide an impervious barrier preventing surface
moisture from percolating down into the soil absorption bed. The final 2 feet of backfill shall then be
placed on top of the visquene barrier, with care being taken to ensure that the barrier is not damaged in the
course of the backfill.
3.8 The top surface of the backfill material shall be raised 6 inches higher than the surrounding terrain
to allow for subsequent settlement, and shall be graded to smooth contours. Additional mate~al shall be
placed east of the soil absorption bed as necessary to ensure that the swale maintains a constant slope
downwards to the west, with no resulting low spot.
4.0 Inspections:
4.1 A total of 6 engineering inspections will be required during the course of the project: (1) initial
stakeout with the contractor to establish the location of the system and to discuss the plans, specifications
and construction procedures, (2) after the native material has been excavated to expose the infiltrative
surface, but prior to placement of any leveling sand, to ensure that the native material conforms with the
soil test information, (3) after the level base of the soil absorption bed has been achieved, (4) after the
sewer gravel is in place and the distribution pipes have been laid and connected up to the septic tank, but
prior to placement of the filter fabric or backfill, (5) after the visquene battier has been installed on the
intermediate graded backfill surface, and (6) after final backfill and grading is complete. The septic tank
requires one inspection after it is set level and the piping connected, but prior to backfill. This inspection
may be incorporated with any of the above inspections.
4.2 The installer shall coordinate the timing of the inspections with the engineer sufficiently fur in
advance to ensure the availability of the engineer.
