Absorption Trench to Lot Line
Dear On Site Services Engineer:
The only available area for a septic system upgrade on Lot 1, Block 2, Valhalla
Subdivision is within 2' of the north lot line. A waiver is therefore necessary to construct
the trench at this location. The property to the north is currently vacant and will require
a Category III septic system due to restrictive ground conditions. Placing the new
trench within 2' of the north lot line will not present further development challenges to
that lot. We therefore recommend a waiver be issued allowing the trench to be within 2'
of the north lot line.

Septic System Reconstruction
The recent excavation near the proposed location for the septic system upgrade for the
subject lot revealed buried roots, stumps and organics at shallow depths. We are
therefore proposing to move the location of the septic system upgrade to the location
shown on the attached drawings. A lot line waiver has been completed and is
submitted.
Please review the attached data and revise the septic system upgrade permit to allow
the revised location.

Septic System Upgrade Permit
We have revised the design to upgrade the septic system on Lot 2, Block 1, Valhalla
Subdivision to include a 5' wide absorption trench constructed 10' from the edge of the
existing failed system. Placement of the trench in this area will allow the existing bed to
remain in place for possible continued use and not require the disposal of contaminated
soils. A ball valve will be placed to tie the existing bed into the system.
The distribution pipe in the new trench will be constructed 6' below the surface. A
waiver request is attached to allow the trench to be 20' from the existing break in grade
which varies from 25% to 50% over the length of the trench. The 4:1 slope extended
from the edge of the trench at 2.5' above the flow line will daylight a minimum of 35'
from the trench. The slope waiver is therefore justified.
The soils log completed for the original septic system indicated groundwater at 13'
below the surface on May 13 with slightly lower depths on May 15. The bottom of the
trench will be 4' above the highest recorded groundwater reading.

Septic System to Excessive Slope
Dear On Site Services Engineer:
Surface area available on the subject lot for placement of a replacement septic system
is severely on the subject lot due the location of the well and various permanent
structures. The only available area is 10' from the existing failed absorption bed on the
lot approximately 20' from the edge of a slope which exceeds a grade of 25% and
drops to the roadside ditch approximately 14' lower. A waiver is therefore necessary to
allow the new absorption trench to be constructed within 50' of this break in grade.
Placement of the trench at this location will allow the existing absorption bed to remain
in place for possible future use. The slope varies in grade from 25% to 50% from the
south end of the lot to the north. A cross section of the slope is provided which
indicates a minimum of 35' is available before the 4:1 slope daylights. We therefore
request the separation distance waiver to the slope be issued.

Impacts to Adjacent Properties
Dear Onsite Services Engineer:
The existing absorption system on the subject lot has failed and must be upgraded prior
to issuance of a Certificate of On Site System Approval for the property. We are
therefore requesting a permit be issued for the upgrade of the septic system to
accommodate the three-bedroom home on the lot. No area remains on the property for
the construction of a new absorption bed. We are therefore proposing to reconstruct
the absorption bed in its current location. All remnants of the existing bed including
contamination will be removed and buried on site. The existing septic tank/lift station
will be exposed and inspected and verified suitable for continued use. The attached
Site Plan and backup documentation identify the location and configuration of the
existing and proposed septic system. Also identified on the plans are the locations of
the existing well those in the area. No conflicts exist between the proposed septic
system and the wells on this or adjacent lots. Drainage arrows are shown indicating
the current drainage patterns. The drainage patterns will be maintained after
construction.
The test hole was placed on the lot when the existing septic system was constructed in
May of 1991. This test hole, completed by Tobben Spurkland, P.E., indicated gravelly
silty sand was found to a depth of 10' underlain by tight silt. The percolation rate was
determined to be 5 minutes per inch. Groundwater was found at 13' below the surface
on May 13 of that year. We are proposing to reconstruct the bed in the same
configuration as the original design. The new bed will be 43' long by 15' wide with .5' of
gravel beneath the distribution pipe. The distribution pipe in the bed will be placed at
2.5' below the surface with the total depth of 5.0' to 5.5'. The original design required 2'
of filter sand. The sand layer will be replaced as required to raise the bottom of the bed

to the original design elevation.
The ground surface on the lot slopes slightly to the west in the area of the absorption
bed. The bed will be placed parallel to the contours of the ground as much as possible
and in conformance with design criteria. A minimum of 1 00'will be maintained between
all components of the septic system and the proposed well and from any surface water
in the area.
If the system is constructed in accordance with our design the following statements
apply:
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on the wells
in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
2. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on existing
septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on reserve
space, either surface or subsurface, on any lots located in the area.
4. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on drainage
patterns in the area. The current drainage pattern will be maintained.

engineer registered in the State of Alaska. Certificates of On -Site Systems Approval are required for the transfer of
title (except between spouses) for properties served by a single-family on-site wastewater disposal and/or water
supply system. DSD also issues COSAs upon request to homeowners. Certificates of Onsite Systems Approval
are valid for 90 days from the date of issue for properties served by a private or Class C well and may be reissued
with new water sample results. (Certificates may be reissued for a period of up to one year with valid water
samples.) Certificates are valid for one year.for properties served by Class A or B wells or a public water system.
The Municipality of Anchorage is not responsible for errors or omissions in the professional engineer's work.
