The drilling was performed on April 15, 1976 utilizing
a truck mounted Mobile Drill B-50 drill rig owned and
operated by Denali Drilling Inc. The drilling was supervised
and the test holes logs by Hr. Terry Barber, staff geologist
for Alaska Testlab.
Due to the presence of a coarse silt existing down to
10.5 feet, we extended the test hole to a depth of 20
feet.
After the drilling was completed, a 20 foot long, 3/4
inch diameter length of slotted plastic pipe was placed
itl the hole. The hole was filled with water and allowed
to saturate. We again return]ed to the site and filled
the hole with water, mc~nitoring the rate at which the
water ]evel in the hole dropped over a per/od of 90 minutes.
The minimum percolation rate during this period was 1 min./inch.
As requested we performed a subsurface investigation to
determine the suitability of the on-site soils for acceptance
of an on-site sewage disposal syste~n for %he above referenced
lot.
Mr. Patrick ~qaltland
April 22, 1976
Page 2
We recognize that this is not a standard percolation test,
but it our understanding that tests performed in this
manner are perferred by thq Ml~nicipality of Anchorage,
Departn%ent of Environmental Quality.
No water table was obserw~d during drilling, though it
should be remembered the water table will fluctuate with
seasonal and climatic changes.
We %,;ou]d also like to note that we fee]. the high percolation
rate observed is largely taking place in the soils below
10.5 feet. We would reconm~end that the seepage trench
be placed entirely in this ~naterial, or that the design
percolation rate be increased to at ].east 5 min,/inch
and no more than half of the seepage trench placed in
the less permeable soils above 10,5 feet.
There also is some fill. on the site and, in fact:, was
so soft that ~.;e were able to push the auger ahead under
the hydraulic action from the dri].l from 5 to 7-1/2 feet.
It wol~ld be prudent prior to construction of a home on
the site to carefully look at the foun¢~ation requi~.uments
for your structure, or excessive settle~.lent could potentially
otc%ir.
If we ¢:an be of any further help or offer any. clarification,
please contact us.
Very sincerely yours,

Re:
Subsurface Investigation for Suitability of
On-Site Sewer Lot 4, Block 1 Woodland Lakes Development
Unit No. 1
Dear Mr. Maitland:
.As requested we performed a subsurface investigation to
determine the suitability of the on-site soils for acceptance
of an on-site sewage disposal system for the above referenced
lot.
Following this report are:
Vinicity Map Figure 1
Test Hole Location Sketch Figure 2
Test Hole Log Table A
Standard Explanatory Information Sheets 1-3
The drilling was performed on April 15, 1976 utilizing
a truck mounted Mobile Drill B-50 drill rig owned and
operated by Denali Drilling Inc. The drilling was supervised
and the 'test holes logs by Mr.. Terry Barber, staff geologist
for Alaska Testlab.
Due to the presence of
10.5 feet, we extended
feet.
a coarse silt existing down to
the test hole to a depth of 20
After the drilling was completed, a 20 foot long, 3/4
inch diameter length of slotted plastic pipe was placed
in the hole. The hole was filled with water and allowed
to saturate. We again returned to the site and filled
the hole with water, monitoring the rate at which the
water level in the hole dropped over a period of 90 minutes.-
The minimum percolation rate during this period was 1 min./inch.

Page 2
We recognize that this is not a standard percolation test,
but it our understanding that tests performed in this'
manner are perferred by the Municipality of Anchorage,
Department of Environmental Quality.
No water table was observed during drilling, though it
should be remembered the water table will fluctuate with
seasonal and climatic changes.
We would also like to note that we feel the high percolation
rate observed is largely taking place in the soils below
10.5 feet. We would rec.ommend that the seepage trench
be placed entirely in this material, or that the design
percolation rate be increased to at least 5 min./inch
and no more than half of the seepage trench placed i'n
the less permeable soils above 10.5 feet.
,There.also is some fill on the site and, in fact, was
so soft that we were able to push the auger ahead u~nder
the hydraulic actioh from the drill from 5 to 7--1/2 feet.
It would be prudent prior to construct'ion of a home on
the site to carefully look at the foundation requirements
for your structure, or excessive settlement could potentially
~.occ~r.
If we can be of any further help oz' offer any clarification,
please contact us.
Very sincerely yours,
ALASKA TE S TLAB

Test Hole Log - Description Guide
The soil descriptions shown on the logs are thc best estimate of tile soil's
characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testing procedure· If the log includes soils samples,
those samples receive an independent textural classification in the laboratory
to verify the field exa~nination.
The logs often include the following items;
Depth Interval -- usually shown to 0.1 foot, witbin that zone no
slgnificant cbat~ge in soil type was observed through drill action, direct
observation or sampling.
Frost Classification - NFS, FI, F2, F3, F4, see "Soil Classification
Chart"
Texture of Soil An engineering classification of thc soils by particle
size and proportion, see "soil Classification Chart", note the
proportions are approximate and modifications to the soil group due to
stratification, inclusions and changes in properties are included~
Moisture Content - this is a qualitative measure:
~. ilo or little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture foruls portion of color, less than plastic limit,
wet, no free water, of/eh softFif cohesive so il,
saturated, free water may be squeezed out, ifa free draini'ng soil;
dilatent at natural moisture content, ifa non-plastic silt or fine
sand. {The moisture content is furtber defined by reference to PI,
LW, NP, M% or dilatency.}
Density -- refers to more-or-less non-cohesive soils, sucb as sand gravel
mixtures with or without a fine fraction, derived fronl drilling action
and/or sample data; usually described as: very loose, loose, medimn
dense, very dense. General intent is to portray earthwork
characteristics.
stiffness refers to nlore-or-less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
the clay-slh groups. Derived from drill action and/or sample data, Very
soft, soft, stiff, very stiff and/lard are commonly used terms.
Particle size Tbe largest particle recovered by tbe split spoon is
1-3/8', Sbelby tube 3", auger flights (minute-man) 2", Auger fligbts
(B-50 hollow stem) 6"-8". Larger particles are described indb'ectly by
action of the drflliug and are referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or
boulders 8"+. Therefore when reviewing tbe gradation sbeets, if any,
the descliption on tbe bole tog must be considered for an indication of
larger particles,
Unified Soil Classifica.tion Tbis is a two letter code. See Unified
Classification sh~t for further definition. In some cases AASHO'and/or
FAA soil classifications may be sbown as well as tile unified.
Atterberg Limils useful for fine grained and other plastic soils.
P~I; natural moisture conteut believed to be less than plastic limit
PI+; natural moisture content believed to be between plastic and liquid
ITmits
Lw+; natural moisture content believed to be greater than liquid Ii.nit
N~P; non-plastic, useful as a modifying description of some silty
Dilatencx - is tbe ability of war? to migrate to tbe surl:ace of a
saturated or nearly saturated soil sample when vibrated or johcd - used
as an aid to determbm if a fine grained soil is a slightly or non-plastic
silt or a volcanic ash.
Rock flour - finely ground soil that is not plastic but otherwise appears
similar to a clayey silt.
Organic Content - usually described as Peat, PT, smncti~nes includes
discrete particl~ such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
soil. Quantity described as; trace, or an estimate of volume, or, in case
of all organic, - as Feat. This may include tundra, muskeg and bog
material
Muck a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits
usually occuring below a peat deposit.
Amorpbus peat organic particles nearly or fully disintegrated,
Fibrous Peat -- organic particles more-or-less iutact.
Bottom of Testbole includes last sample mtervah
Frost lane -- seasonal frost dcptb as described by drilling action and/or
samples at the time o f drilling.
Frozen Ground other than frost lille, described by samples, usually
includes description of ice coutent, often will include modified Unified
Classification for frozen soils -- this is a special case related to
permafrost studies.
Free Water Level -- Tbe free water level noted during drilling. Tbisis
not necessarily tbe static water table at tbe time of drilling or at other
seasons: Static water table dcternlP/ation il/ otber tbal/very pernleablc
soils requi~es observation wells or piezomcter installations, used only in
special eases.
Blow/6" - The number of blows of a 140 weight free falling 30" to
advauce a 2" split spoon 6 ,tlenu her fb[owsfor 12 d ancels,
by definition, the standard penetration.
natural moisture content of the soil sample, usually not
performed on clean sands or gravels below the water table.
'l~pe of Sample -
S~P, refers to 2" split spoon driven into the soil by 140 pound
weight, a disturbed sample,
~, tbin wall tube, "Sbelby" used to obtaiu undisturbed samples
of fine grained soil,
~i, "grab" disturbed sample from anger flights orwaHoftreuch,
C, Ctlt sample, undisturbed sample from wall of trellch.
Dry Strengfl) -- a useful indicator of a soil's clayey fraction. N=None,
L=Low. M=Medium, H=I ligb
Group - Thc samples are placed into apparently similar groups based
disturbed tests including Atterberg Limits, grain size, moisture.density
