As you can see, there is a silt From i to i0 feet, whlch has a percolation rate of 56 minutes per 1nth. Below this ls a silty sand. A percolation test was atter~ted in thls s11ty sand, but according to Oennls Roe, Drilllng Supervise.c, it was a sandy r~terlal that kept sloughing into the drlll hole so that a test could not be run. However, the drlllers felt that slnce the soll actually lr~oroved at l0 feet, it would be safe to apply the sllt's ratlng to the silty sand. On the permit, it was stated that a percolation test would be required in the silty sand. Although I inspected this ,system, I dld not notice thls on the perr~t. I was paying more attention to the drawings and specifications, and thought the permit only had the legal, address and permit numSer. However, slnce a drlll rig could not test the sllty sand, the only test would be by means of a backhoe. To perform a percolation test in the bottom of a test hole dug by a backhoe that was 10 feet deep would be gravely dangerous. According to OSHA, we may not climb down into any trenches or test holes that are deeper than shoulder hel~ht, because a hole can cave in at any tlme, burying a person. ~ly if crlbbing is built can a deep trench be entered safely. The soil in the test hole is silt or better. I feel that applying the 56-minute per lnch ratlng to the entire strata ~uld be qulte appropriate. The septic tank shall rest on undisturbed soil. 2.2 Inlet and outlet piping shall be fitt~t with watertight calder couplings. Piping shall be 4 inch solid PVC, sloped a minimual of 1/4 inch per foot, with a min~ltml of 4 feet of cover. If less than 4 feet, use 1 inch of DOW extruded Blue polystyrene for each foot of cover less than 4 feet. 2.3 Cleanouts shall be installed with c~lder couplings, capped with air-tight jim-caps (or equivalent), and extend a minJalum of 3 feet above ground level. 2.4 The septic tank shall be a minimum of 5 feet from the house foundation, and a minimum of 5 feet frown the drainfield. 3.0 ;GIFT STATION (See sheets 4&5 for Lift Station Specs). 3.1 A lift station will be install¢~ with the lift station specifications. 3.2 The lines fr~n 'the lift station to the drainfield will be composed of either polyvinyl or flexible ABS piping, 1 1/2 inch in diar~ter. TRENCH The gravel for the trench shall be screene~ to the sizes of 0.5 to 2.5 inches and free frc~ silt or sand[. The bottom of the excavation shall be raked with the ~ckhoe blade to insure that the bottom has not been compacted during excavation. The bottom elevation shall be +/- 2 inches. The area excavated in the vicinity of the trench shall be planted with a white clover, red fescue mix, and Kentucy Blue grass over the disturbed area. This investigation was performed in accordance with your request of April 21, 1975, and those procedures outlined in a letter dated December 19, 1974, by Mr. Rolf Strickland of the Greater Anchorage Area Borough Department of Environmental Quality. A single test hole was put down within Lots 4 and 29 for the purpose of defining general subsurface soil conditions for the proposed sanitary system. Excavation was accomplished with an auger type drilling rig and the test holes ware extended to a total depth of 20 and 19 feet below ground surface. One sample was recovered from each of the test holes and retained for grain size analysis. The results of these samples are enclosed. During this test the liquid level in the septic tank was monitored as water was added to the system. If the two bedroom residence on the property is to house four people, the average load on the system can be expected to be 300 gallons per day or .21 gallons per minute. During the test, the system accepted 125 gallons in 95 minutes. This indicates an average effluent acceptance rate of approximately 1.32 gallons per minute at the time of the test. This acceptance rate is also adequate for a 3-bedroom residence for which the average load would be 450 gallons per day or .31 gallons per minute. Because the house on the lot is occupied, we assume that the leach field was at its normal degree of saturation.
