The test boring was drilled and sampled to a depth of 2]..5 feet with a Mobile B-50 drill mounted on a Nodwell tracked vehicle. Field inspection was performed by David Paul of our company. The Mobile B-50 drill employs a hollow-stem, continuous flight auger. Field data includes stan- dard penetration tests which involves driving a 2 inch split spoon sampler with a 140 pound hammer free-falling a distance of 30 inches. The number of blows (N) required to drive the sampler 12 inches is referred to as the standard penetration and is an indication of the relative soil density/consistancy in unfrozen soils. Split spoon samples are usually taken at five foot inter- vals. The soils are then visually classified, bagged and de- Nickell Construction Zodiak Manor Subdivision June 22, 1977 Page 2 livered to our laboratory for moisture content and classification. Subsurface Soils Information There are three separate soil layers occurring at the test hole location on this lot. The surface layer consists of a Gravelly Sand which had a depth of about 2.5 feet. Immediately below this, there occurred a frost-susceptible Gravelly Silty Sand layer which was about 5.5 feet in depth. Immediately below the Gravelly Silty Sand layer, interlayered Silty Sand and Sand were encountered to the bottom of our test boring at minus 2]..5 feet. No ground water was encountered to the depth investigated. Foundation Recommendations The soils which occur at this site are suitable bearing soils for construction. A dead load soil bearing value of 4000 PSF may be assumed for foundation design purposes. The perimeter footings should be provided with 42 inches of so~.l cover. If the soils at the footing grade are frost susceptible, they should be removed and replaced with a non-frost susceptible sand or gravel a minimum of 8 inches below the footings. Minimum footing width should be 16 inches. Exterior building grades shall be designed in such a manner that surface water will be directed positively away from the structure. All concrete slabs may be constructed on non-frost susceptible sands. Perimeter foundation drains are not considered necessary if 'the other recommendations of this report are followed. Nickell Construction Zodiak Manor Subdivision June 22, 1977 Page 3 The soils on this lot are suitable for an on-site septic system with an absorption of 150 square feet drainage area required per bedroom from -1.5 to 10 feet.
