SUBJECT: LOT 14, BLOCK 3, ZODIAK MANOR SUBDIVISION
Dear Susan:
On August 14, 1985, a health authority approval[ was completed on
Lot 14, Block 3, zodiak Manor Subdivision. During this time, it
was found that the septic tank was 85 feet from the well on the
same property and the neighbor's septic was found to be only 90
feet from the well. Both of the leach fields, however are 100+
feet away from the well..
Our request for the septic tank waivers is based on four
specific points. They are (1) the original septic system was
installed and inspected incorrectly, (2) the deep aquifer, (3)
the low contamination level, and (4) a new piped sewer system is
designed and should soon be installed.
The septic system was installed on September 1, 1976. When the
system was inspected, the distance from the well to the septic
was noted as 50+ feet. The ruling for a 100 foot separation was
made in 1973, so the septic was actually installed and inspected
incorrectly.
The inspection report was, unfortunately, also mistakenly
approved by D.H.E.P.
At the start of the 4 hour well flow test, the static water level
was noted at 128 feet. This is a deep aquifer and it is an
advantage in our case because it reduces the possibility of
contamination by the septic tanks.
We feel that the possibility of contaminating a water supply from
a septic tank is much less than with a leach field. In this
case, the leach field on the same property is 108 feet from the
well and the neighbor's leach is 100+ feet.
With this information, we feel that it should not be the client's
responsibility to move either the well or the two septic tanks.
This is especially true when the new sewer is installed. We also

feel that the chance for contamination is quite low due to the
three points already discussed. With this in mind, we feel that
the regulation for the separation distances from the septic tanks
to the well should be waived for Lots 14 and 15 (the neighbor),
Block 3, zodiak Manor Subdivision.

Test Hole and Soil Log Report for Sanitary System
Zodiak Manor Subdivision, Lot 14, Block 3, Section 10,
T12N, R3W, Anchorage, Alaska
Dear MS. Ingalls:
We are submitting herewith the test boring results and our comments
regarding soil conditions encountered at the subject site. This investigation
was performed in accordance with your request and those procedures
outlined in a letter dated July 15, 1975, by Mr. Rolf Strickland of the
Muncipality of Anchorage Department of Environmental Quality.
A single test hole was put down within the subject s~te area for the
purpose of defining general subsurface soil conditions for the proposed
sanitary system. Excavation was accomplished with an auger type drilling
rig and the test hole was extended to a total depth of 20 feet below
ground surface. The final log prepared for the test hole has been
included in Drawing A-01.
Ground water was not encountered in the test hole while drilling.
