On Monday November 29, 1993, we attempted to drill some test holes in the front yard, within thirty feet of the existing system. Due to site constraints, a drill rig was necessary rather than a backhoe. We drilled four test holes, with the deepest being 7 1/2 feet deep. In each case the drill rig hit some large rock and was unable to achieve the required depth. For this reason, we are unable to provide a percolation test or soils log at this time. We are currently designing the replacement system to be about 10% larger than the existing system. We are requesting approval to proceed with the enclosed design subject to running a percolation test once the trenches are opened up with a back hoe. The upper trench has failed, the lower trench is only about 30% functional. We are in concurrence with the previous adequacy test completed by Jeff Garness, that states that the septic system has failed. Attached is a site plan of the lot. It shows the location of our test pits in the back yard. The soils and topography of the back yard will not provide an area for a replacement septic system. It is our recommendation that we remove and replace both of the existing trenches in the front yard. We propose two alternatives: 1. Removing and replacing the existing trenches with standard gravel trenches. 2. Replacing the trenches with In -drain geotexile treatment units. The In -drain units have been approved for use by ADEC. They are currently in use on the new restaurant facility at Alyeska Ski Resort. For sites like this, they offer several advantages the most important being the ability to reduce the Bio Mat build up on the soil surface. Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 Subject: Lot 4, Block 3, Southpark Subdivision Separation Distance Waiver Absorption Trench to Lot Line Dear On Site Services Engineer: The septic system on Lot 4, Block 3, Southpark Subdivision was reconstructed in 1993. The record drawing submitted with the inspection report shows the southern cleanout of the westernmost trench more than 10' from the property line. A recent survey completed this week indicates the cleanout is only 4' from the property line. A waiver is therefore required to allow the system to remain in its current location. The subdivision is served by the AWWU water system and no conflicts were noted with existing septic systems on the adjacent lot. In addition, soil conditions underlying the absorption trench are clean sandy gravel. Septic effluent will be absorbed into the underlying soil rather than migrating to the south. Health & Human Services On Tuesday, August 17, 1999, we inspected and tested the septic system on Lot 4, Block 3, Southpark Subdivision, Addition No. 2. Prior to the inspection we reviewed the files on the system from the archives of the Municipality of Anchorage. These files indicate the absorption trenches were upgraded in December of 1993. At that time the septic tank was inspected and found to be acceptable for continued use. The tank was originally placed in July of 1986. The absorption system consists of two trenches. The trenches are 35' and 40' in length and approximately 10' to 15' apart. The trenches were placed at different elevations on the lot and a tee was placed to divide the flow to the trenches. Our inspection revealed the upper trench was dry and the lower trench contained 12.13" of water. We then injected 671 gallons of water into the post tank cleanout. No water appeared in the upper trench and the water level in the lower trench rose to 24.5". It appears the tee separating the two trenches may be out of level as all of the water appeared to be going to the lower trench. We then measured the water in the lower trench 24 hours later and found it back to the original elevation. The system is therefore capable of absorbing more than the required 600 gallons of water per day and meets the requirements of the Municipality of Anchorage.
