The Drainfield is currently in a state of failure. Per conversations with the owner, he would like to upgrade his existing system to a 4-bedroom system. We are proposing to decommission the existing septic tank (believed to be coal-tar coated 3/16-inch steel) and treatment components. We are proposing to install a new 1500- gallon Advantex Septic tank, pump vault & a new Orenco Advantex panel with Vericomm monitoring and one AX-20 pod. Additionally, we are proposing to excavate the drainfield down to the contaminated material and rebuild the proposed drainfield at an elevation of 0.1 higher than the existing trench. We are also proposing to slightly expand the existing drainfield to 156 ft2 to adequately size the drainfield for 4 bedrooms (see attached design drawings). Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the 1998 testhole by Alaska Water & Wastewater which show the soil classification, percolation test, and groundwater monitoring. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface water concerns. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: There are no topography concerns. GENERAL: The existing 3 bedroom home is served by a private septic system and a private well. The existing septic system is in a state of failure (it will not pass an adequacy test at this time). As can be seen from the site plan, the surrounding protective well radiis and the presence of groundwater at the south property line, limits the available area for a septic system upgrade. The existing well is to be abandoned completely and a new well is proposed to be relocated in the northeast corner of the property (see site plan). Given these site constraints, we are proposing to install the Recirculating Upflow Filter'(RUF)'system. A test'hole was excavated and the soils are summarized as follows: 2. SOIL CONDITIONS: A test hole was excavated on June 3, 1998 to a depth of 8.5 feet. Groundwater was encountered during the excavation at a depth of 6 feet; and was monitored on 6/11/98 at a depth of 6, feet. A percolation test was performed between the depths of 2.5 feet to 3.0 feet and the absorption rate was measured at a rate 5 minutes/inch (see attached soil logs). 3. DRAINFIELD: The intent is to install a Recirculating Upflow Filter (RUF) system that will allow the use of a small drainfield in the area around a 30 foot radius of TH #1. The size of the drainfield will be based upon the previously established criteria for the RUF systems, which dictates that soils percolating between 1 & 30 minutes/inch have an allowable application rate of 4 gpd/ft2, and soils percolating between 30 & 60 minutes/inch have an allowable application rate of 2 gpd/ft2. Given the perk rate of 5 minutes/inch the 4 gpd/ft2 application rate would apply. We are proposing to install a 5 foot wide drainfield that is 24 feet long and has an effective depth of 6 inches. This corresponds to an absorption area of 120 ft2 (>112.5 ft2 OK), or an application rate of 4.0 gpd/ft2 (assuming 450 gpd total flow). 4. ORENCO PACKAGE SYSTEM: The STEP tank with the trickling and upflow filter wilt be manufactured by Anchorage Tank & Welding to meet the latest design criteria established by Orenco Systems, Inc. The point of contact at Anchorage Tank is Lowell McNutt. Since you are familiar with the operation of the system t won't elaborate. As with their- standard STEP tank, it is equipped with a high water alarm per M.O.A requirements. 5. SURFACE WATER: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. 6. TOPOGRAPHY: The average slope on this property is a flat grade, in short there are no slope concerns. 7. CLOSING: I am open to any suggestions from your department that would be an improvement to the proposed system.
