Septic system design
Dear On-Site Services Engineer:
The owner of the above lot intends to build a 4-bedroom home on the property, so we are
submitting this permit application for the construction of a new well and septic system. The
attached site plan identifies the location of the home as well as the proposed well, septic location
and alternate site.
The ground surface on the lot slopes down away from the road at slopes ranging between 15-33%,
but it is in the milder slopes that the system is located, at about 20%. There are no slopes greater
than 25% downslope from the septic location. Downslope is a low spot, but the slopes rise steeply
again at the back. Contours are shown on the site plan showing the grade and direction of flow.
Stormwater drainage will not impact this septic system, as it is not placed in the depression at the
bottom of the property. The new trench will be constructed parallel to the slope as much as
possible.
There are existing test hole logs from a previous permit in the file, and we are using these for the
design. However, we have specified a new test hole to be dug prior to installation in order to
confirm the consistency of the soil layers.
The new system will be a minimum of 100’ from all wells and surface water and more than 5’
away from the septic tank. The alternate site is located more than 6’ away. Please refer to the
attached test hole logs, plan and profile pages for the septic design. If this design is followed, there
will be no adverse impacts to adjacent properties.
Sincerely,
Benjamin Schiller, PE

Ret~ Well and Septic Design for Lots 8, Block 2, Stuekagian H~ights Subdiv'ision
To whom it may concern:
The proposed 4 bedroom house will be served by a private septic system and a private well.
Comments regardin~g the proposed deSign are summarized as follows:
1. SOILS: Attached are logs which shows the soil profile, and the percolation test results. The
soils below the organic layer is a silty gravel material to a depth of 3.5 feet in TH#1 and to 2.75
feet in TH#2. The soils below the sil~y gravel layer transitions to a well graded gravel material in
test hole #1 to a 46~pth of 8 feet. In test hole #2, the soils transitions to a sandy gravel with
pockets of clean sand to a depth of 9 feet. At 8 feet in test hole #1, the soil transitions to a
cohesive mix of silt and small angular rock to a depth of 12.25 feet (bottom of test hole). At 9 feet
in test hole #2, the soil transitions to a silt. No groundwater was encountered during the
excavation of the tegt'holes. The perc61afion tests were performed between the depth of 4:0 feet
to 4.5 feet in TH#1 and at 3.25 feet to 3.75 feet in TH#2. Both percolation rates were <1
minute/inch. The insitu silt layer will serve as a filter. A 2.5 foot thick sand filter will be added to
insure 6 feet separation to impermeable soils (visually determined). The sand filter is not being
used to maintain separation distance to groundwater, so we are proposing to use a 1.2 application
rate.
2. TRENCH DESIGN:
a. Pereolation Rate: <1 minutes/inch
b. Allowable Application Rate: 1.2:gallons/day/ft2
c. Number ofBedrpoms: 4
d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day
e. Minimum Absorption Area: 500 fi2
f. Total Depth: 4.5 feet (maximum, on high side of trench)
g. Effective Depth: 0.5 feet
h. Width: 5 feet mi~mum
i. Minimum Length: 100 feet
j Effective absorption area = 500 ft2
3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed
upgrade.
4. TOPOGRAPHY: Attached is a topography site plan. In short, there are no slope concerns.
I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic
systems. If you h~e any questions, Please contaetme at 337-6179, or 244-9612. Thank you
for your assistance. [
