Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Attn: Dan Roth i. 99 °1+39 Ref. REVISED SEPTIC DESIGN: Lot 5, Block 3, Talus West Subdivision Dear Mr. Roth: The following is a summary of the proposed design modifications we discussed telephonically on 2/15/2000. On the original design we (AWWC, Inc.) failed to note a 10 foot wide utility easement that parallels the east lot line. The presence of this easement became apparent just prior to construction. Give the limited space available on the lot, the only way to install a conventional septic system, and stay outside of the utility easement, would be to encroach upon the old trench. We are proposing to modify the design by installing the new north/south trench right next to the utility easement. It is estimated that it will only be about 7 feet from the old trench. Test hole #2 was probably closer than this to the old drainfield and no groundwater or effluent was encountered. Consequently, it believed that there will be minimal impact on either the old or new trench by this encroachment. Short of reducing the separation distance between the trenches, the only viable septic system for this lot would be an ISF, Reactex, or a BioCycle, which would increase the cost of the installation by as much as $10,000. This is difficult to justify given the facts presented. The trench design is summarized as follows: A. 30 FOOT TRENCH SEGMENT (5 FEET WIDE): The soils on the bottom of the 30 foot segment (test hole #1) are expected to be a poorly graded sand that will percolate faster than one minute per inch. The soil on the sidewalls should be 13.3 minute/inch range. The design used a .8 gpd/sq.fl. application rate for this portion of the trench. The absorption area of the segment (.58 R.F.) is 258 square feet, which is capable of handling 206 gallons per day. Given that this is a 4 bedroom house, the north/south segment must be capable of handling 394 gallons (600-206 = 394). 6901 Debarr Road, Suite 2B * Anchorage, Alaska 99504 (907)337-6179 * Fax: (907)338-3246 * awws@alaska.net B: 50 FOOT TRENCH SEGMENT: The intent is to excavate a test hole, at the south end of the nortb/south segment, to verify that there is no bedrock or impermeable soils to a depth of 17 feet. This will allow us to increase the total depth of the trench to 11 feet and the effective depth to 6 feet. The soils between 9 feet and 11 feet are a GM/ML soil that was not perked within a 30 foot radius of the trench; however, we did run a percolation test in the ML soils in TH #1 and determined the rate to be 36.9 minutes per inch. Furthermore, we know that the existing trench which is over 13 feet deep is in this soil profile and has functioned for 25 years. The ground elevation drops 3.5 feet from the existing grade at the south end of the proposed 50 trench to the north end of the trench. It is anticipated that the new trench will be 11 feet below grade at the south end and 7.5 feet below grade at the north end. It is estimated that the north half of the trench will be completely in the GM soils which were perked (10.4 minutes/inch). The south half of the trench will extend into the GM/ML soils from 0-2 feet. • North one-half of north/south trench: 25 feet long X 6 feet effective X 2 X .8 gpd/sq.ft. _ 240 gallons per day. The combined absorption capacity of this segment and the 30 foot east/west segment is 446 gallons per day (206 + 240 = 446). Therefore, the south portion of the north/south segment must be capable of handling 154 gallons per day. • South one-half of north/south trench: The effective depth will be 6 feet, but for purposes of this evaluation the bottom 2 feet (portion in the GM/ML soils) is neglected, so the total absorption area is: 25 feet X 4 feet effective X 2 = 200 sq. ft. The absorption area of this one-half of the 50 foot trench is capable of handling at least 200 sq.ft. X .8 gpd/sq.ft. = 160 gpd, which is more than the 154 gpd required. Based upon the above calculations the proposed trenches will be capable of handling greater than 600 gallons per day. The trenches will be pressurized as required in the original design package I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Ref: Septic System Upgrade Design for Lot 5, Block 3, Talus West Subdivision To whom it may concern: The existing 4 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The existing septic system consists of a 1250 gallon septic tank and a deep trench type drainfreld. The existing drainfield is in a state of failure and must be upgraded prior to the sale of the house. Two test holes were excavated east and west of the existing of the septic system. Comments regarding the proposed design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: Attached are the logs which shows the soil profile, and the percolation test results. In TH#1, the soils below the organic layers are a SM material to a depth of 2 feet and then transitions to a GM material to a depth of 5 feet. At 5 feet there is a SP lense to a depth of 7 feet and then transitions to a ML material to a depth of 14 feet (bottom of test hole). In TH#2, the soils below the organic layers are a GM material to a depth of 9 feet and then transitions to a GM/ML material to a depth of 15 feet (bottom of test hole). No groundwater was encountered during the excavation of the test holes, and after seven days water was found to be at 12.25 feet in TH#1 and TH#2 was still dry. It is believed that the water in TH#1 migrated from a buried debris pile that was encountered (in another TH) to the south of TH#1. Two percolation tests were performed in TH#1, one between the depth of 2.5 feet to 3.0 feet which had a percolation rate of 13.3 minute/inch and one between the depth of 7.5 feet to 8.0 feet which had a percolation rate of 36.9 minute/inch. One percolation tests were performed in TH92 between the depth of 6.5 feet to 7.0 feet which had a percolation rate of 10.4 minute/inch We are proposing to use the upper stratum of the soils for the design, so it is our opinion that a 0.80 gallons/day/ft2 should apply. 2. TRENCH DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: 13.3 & 10.4 minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate: 0.8 gallons/day/ft2 c. Number of Bedrooms: 4 d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 750 ft2 f. Total Depth: 9 feet (max- at any point.- east trench) & 5 feet (max.- west trench) g. Effective Depth: 3 feet h. Width: 5 feet i. Reduction Factor: 0.58 i. Minimum Length: 90 feet total length (1 @ 60 feet long, 1 @ 30 feet long) j Effective absorption area = 776 ft2 This is to be a pressurized drainfield system. There is to be 3 laterals that are 30 feet long each (1-1/4 inch diameter hdpe pipe) with 1/4 inch diameter holes spaced 3 feet on center (10 holes per lateral - 30 holes total). 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed upgrade. 4. TOPOYYRAPHY: Attached is a topography site plan. We are proposing that the east trench be install perpendicular to the slope and the west trench will be installed in a general flat area at the base of a hill. Elevation shots have been taken where the proposed east trench is to be installed and it was found that there is a 3.5 to 4 foot elevation difference between the south end and the north end. 5. LOT LINE WAIVER: We request that a 1 foot lot line waiver be granted from the proposed drainfields to the west and the east lot lines. We are unaware of any adverse effects on the neighboring properties may have with the granting of this waiver. I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. If you have any questions, please contact me at 337-6179, or 244-9612. Thank you for your assistance. h Sincerely M.S. PH: (907) 345-1355 August 26, 1996 M.O.A. DHHS P.O. Box 19-6650 Anchorage, AK 99519 Dear Sus: 14530 ECHO ST. ANCHORAGE, ALASKA 99516 By means of this letter we are requesting issuance of a formal waiver allowing the septic tank on Lot 5, Block 3, Talus West S/D to remain in its originally installed location which is less than 100 feet from the well on the same lot. At the time of the installation in 1975 the Municipal inspector reported the distance to be 80 feet on the approved inspection report. This waiver request is for 74 feet to allow for underground projection of the tank closer to the well than the distance the Municipal inspector measured to the standpipe. Based on a telephone conversation with Jim Williams on August 19, I understand that DHHS will not require payment of the normal $625 waiver processing fee, since a reduced separation distance was clearly shown on the 1975. inspection report prepared and approved by a Municipal inspector. To assist you in your waiver review process I am enclosing a site plan, well logs, water sample test results, our adequacy test report and HAA application, as well as copies of other relevant documents from your files. According to the driller's log(s), the well serving this lot was originally drilled in July of 1975 to a depth of 126 feet and had a reported yield of 5 gpm. The aquifer being drawn upon by this well was fust encountered at a depth of 123 feet. In September of 1975 the well was deepened to 136 feet, at which time an improved yield of 7 gpm was reported. On August 19, 1996 the static water level stood at 75 feet below the top of the casing. Steady pumping of 752 gallons of water from the well at the maximum pump output of 4.0 gpm caused the water level inside the casing to be drawn down to 103 feet, but no further. - Based on my test data, I determined that the total yield of the well is in excess of 4.0 gpm, which is more than adequate for any single family residence. Water samples collected on August 19 were satisfactory, showing 0 coliform or other bacteria per 100ml., and less than 0.1 mg/1 of nitrate -N. According to the as -built inspection report on file at DHHS, the wastewater disposal system serving this lot was installed in September of 1975 and consists of a 1250 gallon, single compartment, plastic septic tank which discharges into a 65 foot long soil absorption trench containing 8 feet of sewer gravel. The inspection notes and approved report show that the Municipal inspector measured and checked the distance from the well to the septic tank and reported it to be 80 feet. Our more recent measurements indicate that the septic tank cleanout is actually 79 feet from the well; this waiver request of 74 feet is to allow for underground projection of the tank closer to the well. Since the six inch sump at the end of the trench did not provide an effective monitor tube for measuring the fluid level in the trench, the homeowner arranged to have a new perforated monitor tube installed in the trench at the location shown on the site plan. On August 19, 1996 we conducted an adequacy test of the wastewater disposal system. The initial fluid depth in the newly installed monitor tube was 32 inches, which is approximately 5 feet below the level of the horizontal distribution pipe. The addition of 752 gallons of water to the trench caused the fluid level in the trench to rise another 171/4 inches. After the flow of water was stopped the fluid level receded 15/8 inches in less than one hour, which demonstrates that the trench is still able to absorb water at an adequate rate for a 4 bedroom residence. At my request the homeowner also arranged to have the cast iron line between the septic tank and the trench replaced with plastic to eliminate clogging in that area, and installed a double cleanout downstream of the tank. The overall topography of the lot slopes downwards towards the north northwest at approximately 10%. This means that any effluent from a leaking or daylighting septic tank would tend to flow directly away from the well, rather than towards it. The following is a breakdown of how waiver analysis points could be assigned, based on D.E.C.'s 1985 "Separation Distance Waiver Guidelines for SCRO". Category Points Depth to aquifer (123' - 10' = 113') 7.06 Soil sorption (predominantly clay and sand) 4.5 Soil type (predominantly material with a perc rate >50 min./in.) 3 Water table gradient (assume +5%) 4.5 Horizontal separation (74') 1.96 Total 21.02 Based on this assignment of points it appears that the waiver can be safely granted without concern as to contamination of the well attributable to proximity of the septic tank. Further support for granting the waiver is the fact that the septic tank has been in its present location for 20 years without any measurable contamination to date. Please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions on this report.
