Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Ref: Sewer Upgrade for Ginami Hills Subdivision; Lot 2A To whom it may concern: The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The drainfield is in a state of failure, and must be upgraded prior to obtaining a Health Authority Approval for the sale of the house. Comments regarding the proposed upgrade are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: Attached is a soil log which shows the soil profile, and the percolation test results. Below the organics was a tight SM layer to a depth of 10 feet and then transitions to a SW material to a depth of 15.5 feet. At 15.5 feet the soils transitions back to a SM material to a depth of 20.5 feet (bottom of test hole). A percolation test was performed between 10.5 feet to 11 feet and found the rate to be 1.5 minute/inch. No ground water was encountered during the excavation of the test hole. One week later water was found at 14.5 feet below grade 2. BED DESIGN: It is our intent to excavate below the dense SM soils placing the bottom of the bed in the sand layer. a. Percolation Rate: 1.5 minute/inch b. Allowable Application Rate for sand filter: 0.7 gallorffday/ft2 c. Number of Bedrooms: 3 d. Design Flow: 450 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 643 ft2 f. Maximum depth: 11 ft. g. Effective Depth: 0.5 ft. h. Width: 15 i. Length: 45 ft. j. Sand filter = 2 ft. M.O.A. approved sand filter: (2 ft.) k. Effective absorption area = 675 ft2 4. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic upgrade. 5. TOPOGRAPHY: Attached is a topography' map of the area. The area for the proposed bed is generally flat. I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. If you have any questions, please contact me at 337-6179, or at 244-9612. Thank you for your assistance. This inspection revealed a nitrate concentration of 8.17 milligrams per liter (mg/L) was reported for the property's well water sample. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10.0 mg/L for public drinking water systems. While private wells are not subject to this regulation, EPA standards are based on existing health information and can therefore be used to gauge the relative quality of water from private wells.
