I noted some surface water approximately 90' from the designed location for the new system and also found the system to be a substantial distance from the proposed house. We then attempted to find a location for the new system, which was closer to the new house. Two test holes were completed in June near the house location. Two additional test holes were completed on September 8, to determine the depth of the bedrock in the area of the revised location for the new system. Test holes completed in June revealed no bedrock. Those recently completed indicated bedrock at 13' near the west end of the revised location and at 10' nearly 80' east of that location. These holes are identified on the attached Site Plan as THA and THB. We have revised the septic system design to include 2-50' long by 5' wide by 3' effective depth absorption trenches. The total depth of the trenches will be 4' below the surface to provide at least 6' separation from bedrock. All indications are this distance will be much greater than 6'. A Zabel Flow Splitter Valve will be installed to insure even flow of effluent to each trench. We have used an application rate of .7 gallons per square foot per day as an average between the percolation tests completed. More than 90% of the new trenches are within the 30' radius where the percolation rate was determined to be 14.1 minutes per inch. We are confident an application rate of .7 is very conservative for this system. The well location has been moved further to the south. Surveyed measurements to surrounding septic systems indicates the closest system is more than 157' from the location shown. We hereby request the permit issued for the construction of a well and septic system on this lot be revised to include the attached Site Plan. Please let me know if you have any questions or additional information is required. July 23, 2001 Municipality of Anchorage Development Services Department On -Site Water and Wastewater Program 4700 South Bragaw Street Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 Subject: T12NR3WSEC25W1/2SW1/4NW1/4NE1/4 Septic System Design and Permit Application Impacts to Adjacent Properties Dear Onsite Services Engineer: The owner of the subject 5 -acre parcel intends to construct a four-bedroom house on the property, which may eventually become a bed and breakfast operation. We are therefore applying for a permit to construct a well and septic system on the lot to serve the new home. The attached Site Plan and backup .documentation identify the location and configuration of the new septic system and the parameters used in the design. Also identified on the plans is the location of the new well and the 150' protective radius along with the location of the test holes. Existing drainage patterns are shown and will not be altered by the development of the lot. Two separate engineers have placed several test holes near the location of the new absorption trench and the alternate site in the past several years. These holes indicate silty gravel and sand with some cobbles. Percolation tests in the material resulted in rates between 1 and 7 minutes per inch. No groundwater was found during placement of the test holes and none was noted during the monitoring period. We are therefore proposing to place a 5' wide absorption trench with V of gravel beneath the distribution pipe. The total depth of the trench will be approximately 5' Mounding will be required over the trench to provide the minimum 3' of protective cover. The ground surface on the lot slopes as shown on the attached Site Plan with varying grades from northeast to southwest. The new absorption trench will be constructed on a fairly flat surface in conformance with Municipal requirements and parallel to ground contours where possible. If the system is constructed in accordance with our design the following statements apply: 1. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on the wells in the area or those to be constructed in the future. 2. The system,'if.constructed as -designed, will have no adverse impact on existing septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future. NE1/4NW1/4SW1/4W1/2SEC25 ' July 23, 2001 Page Two 3. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on reserve space, either surface or subsurface, on any lots located in the area. 4. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on drainage patterns in the area. The current drainage pattern will be maintained. Sincerely, vwaz" Michael E. Anderson, P.E.
