Per MOA records, the septic system serving the subject property was installed in 1996 and consists of a 1,250 gallon septic tank and a deep trench type drainfield (48 feet long x 3 feet wide with 6 feet of effective). There is also a deep trench type drainfield that was installed in 1987 and is 19 feet long with 8/foot of effective. The owner has recently had some issues with the septic system and noticed the 1996 drainfield was operating at or above the design effective. A diversion valve was installed during the 1996 upgrade but the standpipe was not able to be located. The owner recently hired Arm Services, LLC to locate the missing standpipe for the diverter valve and found that the 1987 distribution line invert was at a higher elevation that the invert of the diverter valve. In short, gravity flow could not be achieved from the 1996 septic tank to the 1987 drainfield. Per the request of the owner, we have designed a septic system upgrade. Louis A Butera, P.E. performed a test hole for the 1996 upgrade and we are proposing to utilize his soil log for the proposed septic upgrade. Attached is a copy of his signed soil log that is on file with your department and the location of the test hole is shown on the attached site plan and design drawings. The proposed septic upgrade shall consist of a 1250 gallon epoxy coated steel septic tank (requested by owner) and a deep trench type drainfield. We are proposing that the 1987 drainfield be excavated, all contaminated materials be removed from the sidewall and bottom of the drainfield. We then propose type Il pit run be added to the bottom of the new drainfield so that the bottom elevation (maximum depth) of the new trench be 11 feet deep maximum form original (existing) grade. Comments regarding the septic design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. TOPOGRAPHY: The general topography in this area is generally flat with a slight slope (1- 5%) slope generally running from North to South. The septic plan is for a single family residence only. 2. The drawing and or site plan shall be a part of this specification. 3. All materials and workmanship shall meet the Anchorage Department of Health requirements. 4. All soil tests are advisory to the design and are to be verified or modified in the field by the engineer. 5. All excavations and depths are advisory and are to be verified in the field by the contractor to meet Municipality of Anchorage requirements. 6. It is the responsibility of the owner to obtain all necessary permits or easements and to locate any adjacent multi -family wells. 7. The total depth of the trench excavation is not to exceed 11' at any point. 4. The new trench shall be connected into the existing effluent line using a Bull - Run type diversion valve. 5. The effluent line within the trench shall be laid level within 0.03'. 6. The trench gravel is to be covered with typar fabric material. 7.
