Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519 Subject: WAVIER REQUEST TI 2N R3W S23 NE4NW4SE4 & NW4NW4NE4SE4 11657 Rock Ridge Drive Ladies and Gentlemen: With this submittal we are applying for a waiver of the 100 foot separation distance required between a septic tank and drain field and surface water. During the well & septic inspection conducted in order to obtain a Certificate of On-site System Approval a small pond (surface area of approximately 200 ft2) was observed approximately 85 feet north of the existing septic tank and drain field. The existing onsite wastewater system consists of a 1250 gallon concrete tank, a deep trench and concrete crib absorption field installed on July 28ih, 1975. The tanks appear to be in good condition and the drain field passed an adequacy test on April 20, 2010. The drive way provides a highly visible barrier between the septic system and the pond. If the septic system were to over flow it, sewage from the system would flow down the drive way. This area is heavily trafficked and it is unlikely that surfacing sewage would go un- noticed. The pond is impounded by the driveway and completely on private property limiting the possibility of a public health hazard. It is my opinion that granting a waiver surface water separation of 85 feet will not negatively impact public safety. Waiver Request: 85 feet from surface water to existing septic system. The septic tank and drain field are underneath the southern edge of the driveway. This is out of the direct travel paths and parking areas of the driveway. The septic system has been operating in the configuration for over 20 years with no discemable negative impacts. It is my opinion that the system will continue to function adequately in this configuration. The septic tank is likely less than 5 feet from the garage foundation. The septic tank is constructed of concrete and the garage has a slab foundation. The septic system has been operating in the configuration for over 20 years with no discernable negative impacts. Please grant a waiver of the required 5 foot separation distance. Waiver request: 4 feet from edge of septic tank to garage foundation. The installation permit states that the septic system will be sized for a two bed room residence. The soils were rated at 180 sq.fl. per bedroom. The current house is three bedrooms. A 1000 gallon tank 540 square feet of absorption arca is required. The existing system consists of a 1250 gallon concrete tank, a 42 foot long absorption trench with a 6 foot effective depth and a 6 foot diameter crib. The tank is sufficiently sized for 3+ bedroom. The absorption area of the trench is 504 sq. ft. and the absorption area of the crib is 113 sq. ft. (Table 7-6, Design Manual Onsitc Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems, EPA) for a total of 617 sq. ft. A barricade has been installed over the septic tank and a berm has been built along the south edge of the driveway to ensure that any septic tank overflow would have to travel more than 100 feet before reaching surface waters.
