Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Reft Septic System Upgrade Design for Heritage Heights Subdivision, Lot 22 To whom it may concern: The existing 4 bedroom house is served by a private septic system and public water. The existing septic system is in a state of failure and must be upgraded. One test hole was performed on the property. Comments regarding the proposed design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: Attached is the soils log which shows soils classification, groundwater monitoring, and percolation test data. No groundwater was encountered in the test hole. The soils below the organics is a SW to a GW/SW material with some silt to a depth of 15 feet (bottom of test hole). A percolation test was performed at a depth of 7.5 to 8.0 feet and found the rate to be <1 minutte/inch. It is our opinion that the insitu soils will act as a sand filter. 2. TRENCH DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: <I minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate: 1.2 gallons/day/ft2 e. Number of Bedrooms: 4 d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 500 fi2 f. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached topography site plan, the area where the proposed trench is to go slopes from east/southeast to west/northwest ranging from a 5 to 15 percent slope. The trench is to be installed parallel to the slope contours. I am una~vare of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. Elvis Brinkley, our office conducted a percolation adequacy test on your existing septic system at the above- referenced location during the period June 16 to 19, 1980. The Municipality's Department of Health and Environmental Protection reported that your septic system consists of 1250-gallon septic tank and a 20' X 22' X 6' seepage pit. The septic tank had not been pumped prior to the percolation test. Since the four bedroom house was not occupied at the time of the test, an extra day of testing was performed to return the leach field to or near its normal degree of saturation. The test results are based on water added on the second and third days of the test. In accordance with the Anchorage Municipal Code, Chapter 15.65, Waste Water Disposal Regulations, any on-site sewage disposal system "shall have adequate capacity to properly dispose of the maximum daily sewage flow." The maximum daily Flow is computed at 75 gallons per capita-day (gopd). Since "the population of dwellings shall be estimated at two persons per sleeping room," the maximum daily sewage flow for your four bedroom house is 600 gallons per day (gpd). To test the soil absorption capacity of your system, 700 gallonsofclear water was added in 50-gallon increments to the seepage pit. The water was obtained from the residence which is on a community water system, at its maximum sustained rate of about 5 gallons per minute (gpm). The liquid levels were monitored closely to detect any backup in the septic system. Mr~ George Groeneman June 20, 1980 Page -2- The attached Table of Test Data represents the depths of liquid in the septic tank and seepage pit, and the quantities of water added. The septic tank was determined to be 8.6 feet deep (bottom of tank to ground surface) with an initial depth of ].9 feet in the tank. The seepage pit was measured to be 11.8 feet deep with an initial depth of 3.4 feet. Ground elevation at the septic tank standpipe is approximately 4 feet above the seepage pit standpipe. The liquid level in the seepage pit rose to ground level after the addition of approximately 500 gallons of water on the second and third day. At this point, the flow rate was reduced to permit addition of the remaining 150 to 200 gallons of water without overflowing the system. The liquid level in the septic tank was raised from 0.8 to 1.05 feet at this point. No sewage backed up into the house. Based on the second and third days of testing, an average percolation rate in excess of 600 gpd is indicated. Since an on-site sewage disposal system for a four bedroom dwelling must be capable of disposing of 600 gallons of sewage per day, the soil absorption capacity of your septic system appears to be satisfactory at this time. Many factors affect the operation of a soil absorption type of sewage disposal system. Soil type, groundwater depth, age and history of maintenance of the system, and types of waste are a few. This test has been performed in an attempt to determine actual soil absorption cap- abilities of your septic system under normal useage. This test can only evaluate apparent performance at'a given point in time, and cannot deter- mine either the condition of the leach field, seepage pit or other components of the septic system, or the depth of the water table.
