SPECIFICATIONS FOR ELEVATED BED ALTERNATIVE WASTEWATER
TREATMENT SYSTEM- LOT 8, DEARMOUN SUBDIVISION
1.0 GENERAL
1.1 THE DRAWINGS SHALL BE A PART OF THIS SPECIFICATION.
1.2 ALL MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP SHALL MEET THE
REQUIREMENTS OF ANCHORAGE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PERMIT.
2.0 THE LIFT STATION
2.1 THE STOCK MATERIAL FOR THE LIFT STATION SHALL BE EITHER
GALVANIZED STEEL (ASTM A-4444-76), OR ALUMINUM CULVERT,
CAPABLE OF BURIAL TO 10 FT.
2.2 THE 24" PIPE FOR THE LIFT STATION SHALL }{AVE A WELDED
WATER TIGHT BOTTOM OF THE SAME THICKNESS AND
COMPOSITION AS THE CULVERT.
2.3 ALL PENETRATIONS OF THE LIFT STATION SHALL BE WELDED
AND WATER TIGHT. ALL WELDS SHALL BE CLEANED OF SLAG.
WELDS ON GALVANIZED STEEL WILL BE SPRAYED WITH ZINC
RICH PAINT OR COATED WITH BITUMASTIC.
2.4 THE TOP CAP SHALL BE RAIN TIGHT AND SECURELY FASTENED
WITH SCREWS.
2.5 ALL ELECTRICAL FITTINGS AND CONNECTIONS IN THE LIFT
STATION SHALL MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A WATER TIGHT
SERVICE.
2.6 THERE SHALL BE A HIGH LEVEL ALARM SET AT THE LEVEL OF
THE SOIL PIPE FROM THE SEPTIC TANK. THE BUZZER SHALL
BE LOCATED NEAR THE ELECTRICAL CONTROL PANEL OR IN A
LOCATION DESIGNATED BY THE HOMEOWNER.
2.7 THE SUMP PUMP SHALL BE CAPABLE OF DELIVERING 10 GPM AT
A HEAD OF 20 FEET.
2.8 THE SUMP PUMP SHALL BE SUSPENDED NOT LESS THAN 6 INCHES
OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE LIFT STATION WITH A CHAIN OR
NYLON LINE.
3.0 SEEPAGE BED
3.1 THE GRAVEL FOR THE BED SHALL BE SCREENED TO THE SIZES
INDICATED.
3.2 THE SAND SHALL HAVE AN EFFECTIVE SIZE OF 0.4 TO 0.6 MM
AND A UNIFORMITY COEFFICIENT OF NOT MORE THAN 4.
3.3 THE PRESSURE DISTRIBUTIION PIPES SHALL BE OF 1/4" RIGID
PVC OR ABS. HOLES 5/32 IN DIAMETER SHALL BE DRILLED @
24" CENTERS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PIPE.
3.4 THE BOTTOM OF THE EXCAVATION SHALL BE RAKED WITH THE
BACKHOE BLADE TO INSURE THAT THE BOTTOM HAS NOT BEEN
COMPACTED DURING EXCAVATION. THE BOTTOM ELEVATION SHALL
BE PLUS OR MINUS 2".
3.5 THE TOP AND SIDES OF THE BED SHALL BE PLANTED WIT}{ A
WHITE CLOVER AND RED FESCUE MIX.
3.6 AN OBSERVATION PIPE SHALL BE PLACED AS SHOWN IN THE
DRAWINGS. IT SHALL BE RIGID PVC, ASTM 3033 D-3034. THE
SECTION SHOWN WITH HOLES MAY BE EITHER DRILLED 0.5"
HOLES @ 6 INCH CENTERS ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE PIPE
OR A REGULAR SECTION OF REGULAR PERFORATED
DISTRIBUTION PIPE MAY BE CLAMPED TO THE SOLID SECTION
WITH A NO HUB COUPLING OR SOLVENT JOINT. A RUBBER RAIN-
CAP (JIMCAP OR EQUAL) SHALL BE PLACED ON THE TOP OF THE
PIPE.
4.0 PRESSURE SEWER
4.1 THE PRESSURE SEWER SHALL BE 1 1/4 INCH POLYETHYLENE
PIPE BURIED TO THE DEPTH OF 5 FEET FROM THE EXISTING
SUMP TO THE SEEPAGE BED. THE PIPE SHALL THEN RISE
VERTICALLY AND BE CONNECTED AS SHOWN IN THE DRAWINGS.

Upon request this office made an inspection of the above subject
property. Prior to the inspection the engineer testing the sewer
system informed me that the system serving the rental unit had
apparently failed and was discharging sewage upon the ground.
This letter will serve as:~a warning. If the sewage continues to
overflow this deaprtment Will bring legal action against the
owner and will require an upgrade.
As long as both systems are pumped and do not create a health
hazard legal action will not be necessary.
From the engineers report we have received, a sewer system could
possibly be installed ~ financially it would be extremly expensive.
An alternative would We tO install a holding tank which would
require pumping an a regular ~asis, usually once every two weeks.

Subject: Lot 8 De Armoun (Homestead) Subdivision
Approval for the individual sewer and water facilities
cannot be granted until the following items have been
completed:
(1)
The depression around the well casing needs to be
filled with impervious ty~e soil so that it slopes
away from the well casing.
(2)
The well casing extended twelve(12) inches above
ground level.
(3)
The septic tank exposed for our inspection. Also,
the septic tank needs to be. pumped with the number
of gallons on the receipt. 'This will need to be
verified by a registered engineer as to the actual
number of gallons pumped. This is to verify the size
of the septic tank.
If it is a 1,250 gallon tank or more, the septic tank
is large enough for a four(4) bedroom dwelling.
(4) According to the engineer, the leaching area to the
rental unit has failed and the leaching area serving
the house could not be located. A standpipe to the
leaching area serving the house will need to be located.
If the leaching area is 120 feet away from the well and
passes an adequacy test for a four(4) bedroom home, this
department may approve the sewer system.

If the adequacy test fails, then a new leaching area
will need to be installed. Prior to the installation
a soils test will need to be obtained so that a permit
may be issued for the upgrade by this department.
(6)
If the existing sewer system is satisfactory or if a new
one is needed, both units will be served by one(l) on-site
sewer system.
