The owner is planning to construct a 4 bedroom house on .'the site. Comments regarding the proposed well and septic design are summarized as follows: GENERAL: Sever, al test holes have been excavated on this property. Due to the presence of groundwater, the location of surface water and drainage probelems, and the limited area where suitable soils were found; a innovative bottomless intermittent sand filter (ISF) is proposed to be installed. WELL: The existing well is located in the northwest corner of the property. SOILS: Two test holes were excavated in the proposed area for the septic system. Attached are the soil logs and pemOlation test results. At the time ofexcavation, groundwater water was found at 9 feet in both test holes. On 7/10/98, groundwater was found at 4.9 feet in test hole #1 and at 6.8 feet in test hole//2. SEPTIC DESIGN: Due to the limited area, we are proposing to install a 10' x 36' bottomless intermittent sand fil~er (ISF) in the Vicinity of TH#1 and TH #2. The following 'is the design criteria for the primary system. a. Percolation Rate: <1 minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate for ISF: 4 gallons/day/ft2 c. Number of Bedrooms: 4 (design meets 5 bedroom requirements) d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 300 ft2 f. Effective Depth below pressure pipes: 2.5+ inches g. Width: 10.5 feet h. Length: 36 feet. i. Effective absorption area = 360 f~2 (>300 ft2 OK) j. Air Supply: Thomas Industries, Model 5070, Anchorage Tank . k. Air Supply Line: W~tasteflow emitterline, 1/2 inch I.D, "Anchorage Tank". 1. Sand Material: Central Paving Products 'W~/inter Road Sand" m. Pea Gravel: 100% passing 3/8" Sieve, less than 20% passing the 114" Sieve, and less than 1% passing the #8 sieve. We are proposing to excavate down to a depth of lfoot (remove all organics), place a minimum of 2 feet of sand, and-install the ~iir supply line 18 inches below the top of the sand. On top of the sand, 6 inches of 3/8 inch pea gravel will be placed, with the pressure laterals midway in the stratum. A conventional lif~ station (Anchorage Tank), equipped with a programmable timer, will be utilized so that flOw can be intermittently dosed to the ISF. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. TOPOGRAPItY: The lot slopes from east to west at grade of less than 10% (see attached topography site plan). 'In short, there are no concerns. MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES: The materials used, and the construction practices will comply with DHHS' "Intermittent Sand Filter Design, Installation & Maintenance Manual". The contractor should read this document prior to construction. Copies are available at the Muhicipal Onsite Services office (Sth floor, 9th & L St.). CLOSING: Given the site restriction, I think the ISF is the most viable option for this lot, short of install a Recirculating Upflow Filter, which would be more expensive. I am open to any suggestions from your department, which would be an improvement to the proposed design.
