Ref: Septic System Upgrade for Lot 1, Heritage Heights Subdivision
To whom it may concern:
The existing 4 bedroom house is served by a private septic system. The septic system consists of
a 1000 gallon septic tank and a pit type drainfield that is failed, and must be upgraded. A test
hole was excavated south ofthe existing septic system in the area ofthe proposed upgrade. The
new septic system will be designed around the 30 foot radius ofthis test hole. We are proposing
that a new 1250 gallon septic tank and 5 feet wide trench type drainfield be installed. Comments
regarding the design are summarized as follows:
1. SOILS: See the attached log which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring,
and the percolation test results. It is our opinion that due to the overall appearance of the soils, an
application rate of 1.2 gallons/day/fl2 should be used.
2. TRENCtl DESIGN:
a. Percolation Rate: <1 minutes/inch
b. Allowable Application Rate: 1.2 gallons/day/ft2
c. NumberofBedrooms: 4
d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day
e. Minimum Absorption Area: 500 ft2
f. Total Depth: I 1 feet (max.)
g. Effective Depth: 4 feet
h. Width: 5.0 feet
i. Reduction Factor: 0.5
· Minimum Length: 50 feet total len_gth
~. Effective absorption area = 500 R2
3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed
upgrade.

Ph: (907) 337-6179 * Fax: (907) 338-3246 * Website: akwwc.com
4. TOPOGRAPIIY: As can be seen on the attached topography site plan, the average
topography of this property is a 5 to 10 percent running from approximately southeast to
northwest. There is a vertical cutbank (5.7' drop) running along Birch Road; approximately 3
feet outside the east lot line. The slope that will occur between the invert of drainpipe in the
proposed trench to the toe of the cutbank will be less than 25%. There is no concern associated
with this separation distance.
I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic
systems. If you have any questions, please contact us at 337-6179. Thank you for your
assistance.

NOTE: Attached is a site plan drawing, a design drawing, a topography site plan, a soils log,
and a 7 page construction specification letter which are all part of the design package for this
septic system.

Dear Doctor Brodie: '
Transmitted herein are the results of a test pit placed in
the project property at the specified location and depth.
The data is organized in this report as follows:
Test Pit Location Sketch
Test Pit Log
Standard Explanatory Data
Data Not on Log
Figure 1
Sheet 1
Sheets 2 to 4
Sheet 5
The test pit was dug by Dyess & Ziegler using a backhoe, on
the 9th of May 1975.
The test pit was logged and sampled by Mr. Peter Herstek, /
technician of our staff. The testing and report by Alaska
Testlab.
The soils found in this study are predominantly frost
susceptible sand silt gravel mixtures with silt prevailing.
The material encountered from 2.0' to 5.0' was a non-frost
susceptible sand.
No free water level was observed in the test pit, and only
0.5' of frost (seasonal) was observed.
The Greater Anchorage Area Borough has established the
amount of seepage area per bedroom required for a particular
seepage pit based On the unified classification of the soil.
We understand this criteria to be as follows:
Dr. Robert Brodie

Seepage Area Required
85 square feet/bedroom

. 275 square feet/bedroom
350 square feet/bedroom
Soils with a seepage area value of greater than 250 square
feet per bedroom are generally considered not sufficiently
permeable to accept effluent. Additionally, the bottom of
any seepage pit is required to be 4 feet above the free
water level.
The unified soils classification of each soil type encountered
and the free water level (if any) observed at the time of
exploration are contained on the test pit log, should
proportioning a specific seepage pit in the area defined by
· the test pit be required.
If there should be any questions on the above, please contact
our office.

Test Hole Log - Description Guide
The soil descriptions shown on the logs are the best estimate of the soil's
characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testing procedure. If the tog includes soils samples,
those samples receive an independent textural classification in the laboratory
to verify the field examination.
The logs often include the following items:
Depth Interval - usually shown to 0.1 foot. within that zone no
significant change in soil type was observed through drill action, direct
bbservation or sampling.
Frost Classification -- NFS, FI, F2, F3, F4, see "Soil Classification
Chart"
Texture of Soil - An engineering classification of the soils by particle
size and proportion, see "Soil Classification Chart", note the
proportions are approximate and modifications to the soil group due to
stratification, inclusions and changes in properties are included.
Moisture Content -- this is a qualitative measure:
dr5,, no or little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture forms portion of color, less than plastic limit,
wet, no free water, often soft, if cohesive soil.
saturated, free water may be squeezed out, ifa free draining soil;
dilatent at natural moisture content, if a non-plastic silt or fine
sand. (The moisture content is further defined by reference to PI.
LW, NP, M% or dilatency.}
Density - refers to more-ordess non-cohesive soils, such as sand gravel
mixtures With or without a fine fraction, derived from drilling action
and/or sample data; usually described as: very loose, loose, medium
dense, very dense. General intent is to portray earthwork
characteristics.
Stiffness - refers to more-or-less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
the clay-silt groups. Derived from drill a:ction and/or sample data. Very
soft, soft, stiff, very stiff and hard are commonly used terms.
Particle size - The largest particle recovered by the split spoon is
1-3/8", Shelby tube 3", auger flights (minute-man! 2", Auger flights
(B-S0 hollow stem} 6"-8". Larger particles are described indirectly by
action of the drilling and are referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or
boulders 8"+. Therefore when reviewing tlie gradation sheets, it' any,
the description on the hole log must be considered for an indication of
larger particles.
Unified Soil Classification - This is a two letter code. See Unified
Classification sheet for further definition. In some cases AASHO and/or
FAA soil classifications may be shown as well as the unified.
Atterberg Limits - useful for fine grained and other plastic soils.
PI; natttral moisture content believed to be less than plastic limit
PI+; natural moisture content believed to be between plastic and liquid
limits
Lw+; natural moisture content believed to be greater than liquid limit
NP; non-plastic, useful as a modifying description of some silty
~-.[t erials.
Dilatency - is the ability of water to migrate to the surface of a
saturated or nearly saturated soil sample when vibrated or jolted - used
as an aid to deter~nine il' a £ine grained soil is a slightly or non-plastic
silt or a volcanic ash.
Rock flour - finely ground soil that is not plastic but otherwise appears
similar to a clayey silt.
Organic Content -- usually described as Peat. PT, sometimes includes
discrete particles such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
soil. Quantity described as; trace, 9r an estimate of volume, or, in case
of all organic, - as Peat. This may include tundra, muskeg and bog
material.
~uck - a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits
usually occuring below a peat deposit.
Amorphus peat - organic particles nearly or fully disintegrated.
Fibrous Peat - organic particles more-or4ess intact.
Bottom of Testhole - includes last sample interval.
Frost Line -- seasonal frost depth as described by drilling action and/or
samples at the time of drilling.
Frozen Ground - other than frost line, described by samples, usually
includes description of ice content, often will include modified Unit~ied
Classification for frozen soils - this is a special case related to
permafrost studies.
Free Water Level -- The free water level noted during drilling. This is
not necessarily the static water table at the time of drilling or at other
seasons. Static water table determination in other than very permeable
soils requires observation wells or piezometer installations, used only iu
special cases.
Blow/6" - The number of blows of a 140 weight free falling 36" to
advance a 2" split spoon 6": the nmnber of blows for a 12" advance is,
by definition, the standard penetration.
M% - natural moisture content of the soil sample, usually not
performed on clean sands or gravels below the water table.
Type of Sample -
S__P, refers to 2" split spoon driven into the soil by 140 pound
weight, a disturbed sample,
_S, thin wall tube, "Shelby" used to obtain undisturbed samples
of fine grained soil,
C,, "grab" disturbed sample from auger flights or wall of trench,
C.g_, cut sample, undisturbed sample from wall of trench.
Dry Strength - a useful indicator of a soil's clayey fraction, N=None,
L=Low, M=Medium, H=High
Group - The samples are placed into apparently similar groups based
on color and texture and arc arbitrarily assigned a group letter. Further
disturbed tests including Atterberg Limits. grain size, moisture-density
relationship, etc. may be performed on thc group attd arc assumed to
reflect the geucral distrubcd characteristics of the soils assigned to thc
group. This is ,tn important phase of the soil analysis and is used to
standardize the various qualitative determinations and to rednce the
number of quautitative tests necessary to describe the soil mass.
