Eagle River, Alaska. To whom it may concern: The subject property is currently undeveloped. The owners are proposing to construct a four bedroom house, which will require the installation of a well and a septic system. Comments regarding the proposed design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: Attached is a copy of the soil log. The soil below the organic/loam layer was a gravelly sandy soil, with small cobbles, and numerous thin layers of sand. The percolation rate of the soil, at a depth of 4.5.- 5.0 feet was less than 1 minute/inch. Based upon my visual observation, the soils throughout the test hole depth appeared to be in the 1-5 minute/inch range, and there appeared to be enough thin sand lenses to justify not using a sand filter. The sidewalls of the test hole were stable (no sloughing) indicating that there was enough fines to serve as a binder. It is my recommendation that a deep trench be installed. Neither of the septic systems on the adjacent Tots utilize sand filters. Regardless, if your department deems it to be necessary, we can install shallow trenches, with sand filters. Attached is a design drawing for either option. The specifics of the deep trench design are summarized as follows: 2. TRENCH DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: <1 minutes/inch. b. Allowable Application Rate: 1.2 gallons/day/ft2 c. Number of Bedrooms: 4 d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 500 ft2 f. Total depth: 8 feet g. Effective Depth: 5.0 feet ) h. Reduction Factor = N/A i. Width: 2 feet minimum j. Minimum Length: 50 feet k Effective absorption area = 500 ft2 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: The lot slopes 15%-20% downhill, from north to south, at the proposed trench sites. At the south end of the lot, near the road cutbank, the slope transitions to greater than 100%. There are no slopes, downhill, and within 50 feet of the trenches, that are greater than 25%. In short, there are no slope concerns. I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems.
