DSD P.O. Box 19-6650 Anchorage, AK 99519 Dear Sirs: The purpose of this letter is to provide the required design narrative in support of our application to upgrade the wastewater disposal system serving the 3 -bedroom residence on Lot 4, Block 12, Elmore S/D #2, located at 4800 East 147" Avenue. A soils log, perc test results, a site plan, design drawings and specifications arc enclosed for your review. As can be seen from the soils log for test hole #1, the native soil between 1' and 5.5' and also between 7' and 14' below ground level is slightly sandy gravel with a measured percolation rate of much less than one minute per inch. Groundwater was encountered at a depth of 13' below ground level and the groundwater level remained stable during the subsequent week of monitoring. Because the groundwater monitoring was conducted during a dry time of the year we propose to construct as shallow of a 5 -foot wide drainfield system as can be done with a gravity system, which means that the bottom of the sewer gravel will be 7 feet above the stabilized groundwater level. Due to the rapid measured percolation rate of the native soil we propose to install a 2 -foot thick sand filter under the sewer gravel. Using a soil application rate of 1.0 gpd/sq. ft. as specified in the wastewater ordinance for filter sand, the required basal absorption area for a 3 -bedroom residence is (3 x 150)/1.0 = 450 square feet. The proposed two parallel 5' wide by 45' long soil absorption drainfields have a combined basal area of 450 square feet. The proposed system will have no significant impact on present or future water supply and wastewater disposal systems serving adjacent properties, nor will it have any significant impact on reserved space - surface and subsurface, or on drainage. Please give me a call at 345-1355 if you have any questions on this submittal. Minor deviations from these drawings may be allowed or required by the engineer conducting the inspections. All construction procedures and material specifications shall conform to Municipal and State requirements. All separation distances shall be in conformance with Municipal requirements, unless specifically waived. 1.3 The contractor shall be responsible to obtain any necessary utility locates, and to work around any buried utilities. 1.4 Unless agreed otherwise, the contractor shall be responsible for any tree clearing and grubbing necessary to complete the project. 1.5 The contractor shall provide adequate cover material and rough grading over all system components to ensure that proper drainage is achieved after settlement and that there are no residual depressions. Insofar as possible the contractor shall minimize damage to trees and existing lawn areas. 1.6 Unless specifically agreed otherwise, the homeowner shall be responsible for finish grading after the soil is compacted, and seeding all areas disturbed by the construction. 2.0 Septic Tanks: 2.1 The existing 1000 -gallon, steel septic tank and log crib seepage pit shall be properly abandoned per code. 2.2 Anew 1000 -gallon Municipally approved septic tank shall be installed in the approximate location shown on the site plan. 2.3 All pipe connections to the tanks shall be equipped with waterproof mechanical couplings. The waste line from the residence to the septic tank shall have a minimum slope of 1/4'" per foot. A foundation cleanout shall be installed within 4 feet of the building foundation, or a double cleanout installed upstream of the septic tank. 3.0 Soil absorption system: 3.1 The soil absorption system shall be constructed by excavating two (2) parallel 5 -foot wide by 45 -foot long excavations to a depth of 8.0 feet below ground level at the test hole. The excavations shall be laid out to preserve 10 feet of undisturbed soil between them, as well as between them and the original seepage pit. 3.2 The bottom of the excavations shall be level. Any compacted or smeared surfaces shall be raked to allow proper infiltration. 3.3 A total of 2.0 feet of ISF filter sand (with less than 2% passing the #100 sieve and 1% passing the #200 sieve) shall be placed in the excavation and compacted by foot to create a level surface at 6.0 feet below original ground at the location of the test hole monitor tube. 3.4 Next, a total of 1.0 feet of washed sewer gravel shall be placed on top of the sand with the perforated distribution pipes laid level such that the pipe inverts are no less than 0.5 feet above the bottom of the sewer gravel. 3.4 The distribution pipes shall be 4" diameter ASTM F-810 perforated pipe. Monitor tubes shall be of 4" diameter and installed in the locations shown on the design drawings. The portion of the monitor tube extending through the sewer gravel shall be perforated. 3.5 Approved filter fabric shall be placed over the entire top surface of the sewer gravel. 3.6 The backfill shall be mounded a minimum of 6 inches above original ground level. Fill slopes shall be no steeper than 3:1. 3.7 Unless specifically agreed otherwise the homeowner shall be responsible for arranging to have the site finish graded after the backfill material has stabilized, and for placement of adequate seed to promote rapid rcvegetation. 4.0 Inspections: 4.1 A total of 5 engineering inspections will be required during the course of the project: (1) initial stakeout with the contractor to establish the location of the system and to discuss the plans, specifications and construction procedures, (2) after the native material has been excavated to expose the infiltrative surface to ensure that it is level and at the right elevation, and conforms with the soil test information, (3) after the compacted sand filter material has been placed, (4) after the sewer gravel is in place and the distribution pipes have been laid and connected up to the STEP tank, but prior to placement of insulation or filter fabric, and (5) after rough backfill and grading is complete. The septic tank installation inspection shall be in conjunction with one of the other listed inspections. 4.2 The installer shall coordinate the timing of the inspections with the engineer sufficiently far in advance to ensure the availability of the engineer. The least carelessness in collecting and handling may give rise to results which are misleading, Arrangements should be made to have water samples reach the laboratory as quickly as possible. After 48 hours the significance of the bacteriological analysis is impoired.'For obvious reasons the laboratory prefers to receive samples in the early port of the week but is willing to accept samples of any lime. In collecting samples from TAPS or PUMPS proceed as follows: (a) Thoroughly flush tap or pump by allowing water to run freely for five minutes. r (b) SIM off water and flame the oullol with torch or burning paper. The flume should not be merely passed over the outlet but should be applied until fixture shows indication of being hot. Flume should be directed against inside edge. (c) Open fixture so that a small stream flows. (d) Remove bottle from mailing lube. Hold bottle by the lower halt in one hand and with the other remove the screw cap with the fingers, leaving paper protecting cover in place. Fill the bottle to the shoulder. Repluce cap with paper cover, screwing firmly into place but do not apply pr.usure which will split cap. (e) Pack bottle carefully in mailing tube enclosing this cwnoleted information sheet. In collecting samples from STREAMS and RESERVOIRS proceed as follows: (a) Remove cap and hold bottle as described under (d) above, (b) Collect somple by holding bottle in a stunting p,,;ition and sweeping it below the surface in such a monger thul woler that has been in contucl with the band is net introduced into the bottle.
