Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Reft Septic System Upgrade for TI2N, R3W, See 33, Lot 39B (Bottomless Intermittent Sand Filter - ISF) To whom it may concern: The existing 4 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The existing septic system consists of a 1250 gallon septic tank and a bed type drainfield. The existing bed is surcharged and must be upgraded. We are proposing that a 1500 gallon S.T.E.P. tank and a Bottomless Intermittent Sand Filter (IS1e) system be installed. Comments regarding the proposed upgrade are summarized as follows: 1. GENERAL: Two test holes were excavated on the south halfofthe property to determine an area suitable for a septic system upgrade. Due to the high groundwater and the limited space with suitable soil to support a septic system, it is our opinion that a Bottomless ISF system is the most viable option. 2. SOILS: Attached are logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. It is our opinion that due to the overall appearance of the soils, a application rate o f 2 gallons/day/ft2 should be used. 3. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: Bottomless Intermittent Sand Filter (ISF) a. Percolation Rate: <1 minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate for ISF: 2 gallons/day/fi2 c. NumberofBedrooms: 4 d. Des!gn Flow: 600 gallons per day., e. Mimmum Absorption Area: 300 ft~ f. Effective Depth below pressure pipes: 3+ inches g. Width: 12 feet 6901 Debarr Road, Suite 2B * Anchorage, AK 99504 Ph: (907) 337-6179 * Fax: (907) 338-3246 * Website: akwwc.com h. Length: 30 feet. i. Effective absorption area -- 360 ft2 j. Air Supply: Thomas Industries, Model 5070, "Anchorage Tank". k. Air Supply Line: "Wasteflow" emitterline, 1/2 inch I.D, "Anchorage Tank". I. Sand Material: In accordance with M.O.A. latest standards m. Pea Gravel: 100% passing 3/8" sieve, less than 20% passing the 1/4" sieve, and less than 1% passing the #8 sieve. We are proposing to excavate down to a depth of 2 feet (maximum - remove all organics), place a minimum of 6 inches of sand, install the air supply line, and cover it with 1.5 feet of sand. On top of the sand, we will place 6 inches of 3/8 inch pea gravel, with the pressure laterals midway in the layer. We will use a conventional lift station (Anchorage Tank), equipped with a programmable timer so that flow can be intermittently dosed to the ISF. 4. SURFACE WATERS: There is no surface water within a 100 foot of the proposed septic system upgrade. 5. TOPOGRAPHY: All the topography within 50 feet ofthe proposed septic system upgrade is less than 10% slope. In short, there are no slope concerns. 6. MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES: The materials used, and the construction practices will comply with DHHS' "Intermittent Sand Filter Design, Installation & Maintenance Manual". The contractor should read this document prior to construction. Copies are available at the Municipal Developement Service Department office (4700 South Bragaw St.). 7. CLOSING: I am open to any suggestions from your department, which would be an improvement to the proposed design. I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. If you have any questions, please contact me at 337-6179. Than~/~)~ ou for your assistance. ~ m~ess, P.E., M.S. NOTE: ,dttached is a site plan drawing, a design drawing, a detail drawing for the ISF, 2 soils logs, and a 7page construction specification letter which are all part of the design package for this septic system. 6901 Debarr Road, Suite 2B * Anchorage, AK 99504 Ph: (907) 337-6179 * Fax: (907) 338-3246 * Website: akwwc.com ~ I !~ LOT27 E. 142 AVENUE ~ .... Lambe, P.E. 4303 North Star Street Anchorage, Alaska, 99503 January 13, 1977 907-279-8056 Mary Lent fer SRA Box 248E Anchorage ~ Alaska, 99507 Sdbject: Adequacy Test - Lot 39, Section 3.3, T.12 N., R.3 W. Dear Mrs. Lentfer, At your request, the writer performed the follov~.ng test in an effort to evaluate the adequacy of the existing seepage bed p~esently in use on Lot 39, Sec. 33~ T12N., R.3W. The records on file at the Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health and Environmental Protection Sewer and Water Section indicate that 64 L.F. of perforated pipe ( 4" diameter assumed ) was placed 18" above ~he bottom oT a three· foot thick, 40' X 40", gravel absorption bed. The records indicate that the~ syst'em was.:in~talled in the summer of 1973, to replace an existing wood crib. The capacity of the existing septic tank was not observed'to be on record. The native, receiving soils are reported to be Gravel and Silty Sandy Gravel with a rating of 170 ft2/bedroom. Mrs. Lentfer reports no problems with the system since its modification in 1973. Since the septic tank was not reported to have been recently pumped, the effluent level measured at 12-3/4" below the lip of the septic tank vent at 3:15, January 12, 1978, was assumed to be the Static Level in the Septic Tank. On January 12, 1978 the writer pumped metered amounts of water into the septic tank at approximately 10 gpm, with the following results: DEPTH BELOW TOP OF METER READING SEPTIC T~( VENT ( GALLONS ) 12-3/4" 34040 12" 34080 12 " 34130 12" 34180 11-1/2" 34230 11-3/8" 34280 GALLONS P~PED ( N~T O0 4O 9O 14o 19o 24O TIME 3:25 3;35 3:40 3:45 3:5 3:56 Lent fer ge two January 13, 1978 11-3/8" 34320 280 4:01 11-1/4" 34380 340 4:07 11-3/8" 34430 390 4:12 11-3/8" 34480 440 4:18 11-3/8" 34530 490 4:22 On January 13, 1978, the writer observed the system to have recovered to the static level. The writer again entered metered amounts of water into the system with the following results: DEPTH BELOW TOP OF METER READING GALLONS PUMPED TIME SEPTIC TA~ VENT ( GALLONS ) ( NET ) 12-3/4" 34530 0 10:O9 11-1/2" 34580 50 10:14 11-1/2,, 34630 100 10:19 11-1/2', 34680 150 10:24 11-1/2,, 34730 200 10:29 11-1/2,, 34780 250 10:34 11-1/2,, 34830 300 10:39 11-1/2" 34880 350 10:44 11~1/2,, 34930 400 10:51 11-5/8" 34980 450 10:56 12-3/4" 34980 450 11:07 ONCL S ONS _ For a 3 bedroom house, we assume a 450 gpd load on the absorption bed. In this test, we entered 490 gallons in less than one hour (Daily Load + 40 gallons to fill the drain field lines) on January la. We entered 450 gallons (Daily Load) the following day, in addition to the normal household useage in the interim between tests ( Assume 375 gallons). With this loading the system returned to the static level ll minutes after cessation of the second test° At a pump rate of 10 gpm a maximum of 1-1/2,, rise above the static level occured. Based.on,these data, it is the writers opinion that the system appears to be adequately accepting the design effluent load from this 3 bedroom house. Very Truly Yours, John M. ~be, P.E. The average life of an asphalt coated steel septic tank is 20 years. Typical replacement costs are $15,000 or more, not including engineering, surveying, MOA permitting fees or site restoration. Steel septic tanks utilizing "Coal Tar Pitch" coatings are subject to corrosion as the steel reacts to water and rusts. These tanks have a finite lifespan buried in the ground. These tanks can become structurally compromised and pose a health risk. They could collapse and/or leak untreated wastewater directly into groundwater. In the interest of protecting public health and the environment, the Municipality of Anchorage Development Services Department has issued Policy W.05 Standard of Care Regarding the Inspection of Steel Septic Tanks when Performing COSA Inspection. Please request a copy of this policy from the Department if interested. This advisory must be attached to all copies of the subject Certificate of On -Site Systems Approval. IMailing Address: P. Q.
