The items are listed in the same sequence as you transmittal sheet. 1. PROPOSED SYSTEM TOO DEEP FOR SOIl, TEST SUBMITTED. The soil test pit was excavated to 13 ft depth which is adequate for the disposal trench to be installed to a 9 t~ depth. The code requires a test hole to 15 fl depth to check for bedrock. This requirement is noted on sheet 1/5 in the documents submitted on 9/I/00 that a test hole will be extended to this depth during construction. This is a logical request considering the soils in this area being glacial deposits to depths well exceeding the required 15 ft depth. To require an independent test hole at this time would cost the homeowner an estimated $400 in increased costs and is not necessa~'. 2, JIJSTIFICATION FOR 5' LOT I,INE WAIVER NOT PRECLIIDING LOT 23 ABII,ITY TO UPGRADE SEPTIC SYSTEM. The topography of Lot 23 results in its septic system being higher on the hill and toward the back (East side) of the lot as shown on sheet 5/5 of the 9/1/00 submittal. There are other drain fields on adjacent lots that are adjacent to the North East comer of lot 23 so minimal conflict exists in this area for expansion. Constructing a drain field within 5 ft of the lot line on lot 24 will not affect the ability for lot 23 to expand its drain field. 3. TilE EDGE OF TIlE PROPOSED ABSORPTION TRENCH IS WITlllN TIlE WELl, ]iADIUS. The sketch on sheet 4/5 ofthe 9/1/00 does not show the trench within the radius. I believe that you are referring to sheet 3/5 which could be interpreted that a comer of the trench within the radius. This was discussed with you during our 9/21/00 meeting that the trench would be outside the radius and follow MOA requirements. The drat~ing error has been changed.. James Ao Crum, P.E. OBSERVATION TUBE The observation tube will be installed to the bottom ofthe absorption trench as required by MOA requirements. Sheet 5/5 indicates the tube would extend below the trench bottom which is a drafting error which has been changed. 5. CONFLICTING EASEMENTS There are no easements along the south lot line of lot 24 that would conflict with the installation. 6. SCALE OF TIlE DRAWINGS - The drawings are shown in several different scales to present the design and information for review. These scales do not affect the design and should not affect the review. 7. WAIVER FOR WATER WEl,1, ON LOT 15 FROM EXISTING SEEPAGE PIT. A requirement for this waiver is listed on you work sheet. The water well was drilled on lot 15 after 1978. The seepage pit was installed on lot 24 in 1974. When the water well was located it apparently placed too close to the pit. It is not the responsibility ofthe owner of lot 24 to secure this waiver. I trust this information is adequate for you to process the waiver. BOX 196650 Aneborage, AK 99519 Attn: Dan Roth Subject: Lot 24, Stockhausen Subdivision Septic tank replacement, Well to septic tank, Well to drain pit, Drain field to lot line waiver request. Dear Mr. Roth: I am writing to request a separation distance waiver from an existing domestic well from a newly installed septic tank, and an existing drain pit. In addition, another lot line waiver will be necessary to install a new drain field for this residence. The septic tank collapsed in late December last winter and was replaced under my review. The replaced tank was installed in 1973 along with the seepage pit. The new tank could not be installed outside the 100 fl well radius and be within the proper clearance from the drain pit so it was installed as far as practical from the well (75 ft). The drain pit was checked and pumped at that time and found working adequately (no surfacing sewage) but probably near the end of its useful life unless allowed to rest and serve as a stand-by system. Lot 24 is 0.71 acres in size and has the well dri~ed approximately in the center of the lot which limits the possible areas to consider for a drain field. The lot is located on glacial till in Peters Creek and is slightly sloped towards the site of the drain field. A site for a new drain field was located near the existing drain pit and a test pit/perk test was done when the septic was installed in December, 1999. The encountered conditions were adequate for installing the drain field. ttowever, using this site will require a waiver as it will be located 5 ft from the lot line. To aid in evaluating the proposed siting ofthe alternate drain field I have calculated the evaluations points as outlined under 18AAC80.020 and 18AAC72.021 (a) as follows: Distance from sewer bottom to groundwater Soil sorption below sewage system Soil permeability below lhe system 4.0 2.5 1.5 2 Water table gradient Horizontal separation Total points 2.9 3.0 13.9 12-16 No bacteriological pollution possible but chemical pollution possible but not likely from household chemicals. In my opinion, this waiver request meets the above criteria for approval and does not constitute risk to health. The well has functioned with out problems for 36 years. The septic system and drain pit were installed in accordance with GAAB standards and have functioned adequately since installation in 1973.
