Septic System Design
Impacts to Adjacent Properties
Dear Onsite Services Engineer:
The existing absorption bed on Lot 10, Block 4, Trails End Subdivision was
constructed in May of 1993 to serve a two bedroom home. It was only
recently put into service, but the house constructed on the lot included
three bedrooms. We are therefore applying for a permit to upgrade the
absorption bed for a total of three bedrooms. The attached site plan and
backup documentation identify the size and location of the absorption bed
extension. The existing well location is also identified and the 100'
protective radius is shown.
Several testholes were placed on the lot prior to construction of the
original bed. Groundwater was found at 4' to 5' below the surface of the
original ground. The bed was therefore constructed at original ground
level. Once construction was completed an additional 5' of fill was placed
over the bed. The new bed extension will match the elevation of the old
bed and be nearly 6' below the now existing ground surface.
The original bed was placed in an area with reasonably good soil. It was
designed for an absorption rate of ,4 gallons per day per square foot. The
bed extension is also designed using this rate. The existing septic tank
has been in use for less than six months. Our initial probe indicated very
little sludge accumulation in the tank. It will be reused for the new
system since it is already sized for a three bedroom home. It appears the
extension to the bed can be completed without any conflict to the well on
the lot or on adjacent lots.
Lot 10, Block 4, Trails End
May 20, 1998

Substantial fill has been placed on the lot and the original slope has been
reduced to approximately 5% from east to west and 2% from north to
south.
If the
1.
system is constructed as designed the following statements apply:
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact
on the wells in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
e
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact
on existing septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in
the future.
The system, if constructed as designed,

located in the area.
will have no adverse
or subsurface, on any lots
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact
on drainage patterns in the area. The current drainage pattern will
be maintained.

Attached is the alternate design for the drainage bed for the septic
system proposed for the subject lot. The dimensions of this bed are
18' X 45' as opposed to 24' X 34' on the original design. Both designs
provide more than the required amount of drainage area for the
house proposed for construction on this lot. Please call if you have
additional questions or comments.

Impacts to Adjacent Properties
Dear On Site Services Engineer:
The subject lot slopes at a rate of 7% to 9% in an east to west direction and at a 6%
grade from north to south. The slope is fairly uniform and will prevent any ponding
at or near the proposed bed system. Groundwater was encountered at depths of 4' to
5' below the surface necessitating the design of the bed system. The lot is small but
sufficient area is available to place the primary and alternate systems and maintain
the 10ft separation from all existing and proposed wells in the area. If the system is
constructed as planned the following statements can be made:
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on the wells
currently in use or to be placed in the future on lots in the area.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on existing
septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on reserved
space, either surface or subsurface, on any lots located in the area.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on drainage
patterns in the area.
Sincerely,

Dear On Site Services Engineer:
The subject lot slopes at a rate of 7% to 9% in an east to west direction and at a 6%
grade from north to south. The slope is fairly uniform and will prevent any ponding
at or near the proposed bed system. Groundwater was encountered at depths of 4' to
5' below the surface necessitating the design of the bed system. The lot is small but
sufficient area is available to place the primary and alternate systems and maintain
the 100' separation from all existing and proposed wells in the area..If the system is
constructed as planned the following statements can be made:
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on the wells
currently in use or to be placed in the future on lots in the area.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on existing
septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on reserved
space, either surface or subsurface, on any lots located in the area.
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on drainage
patterns in the area.

Anchorage, Alaska
Subject: Soils investigation for sanitary sewer system on;.~t 10, Block 4,
~ Trails End Subdivision, Anchorage, Alaska.
At your REquest of July 20, 1978, I conducted a soils investigation at the
proposed location of a sanitary sewer system on the subject lot.
This investigation, which was accomplished on July 25, 1978, consisted of the
inspection of soils removed during drilling of s 6 inch diameter, 18.5 feet
deep test hole, using solid flight augers powered by a Mobile B-50, track mounted
drilling rig. After cumpietion of drilling, the test hole was filled with water and
a percolation test performed. The results of the percolation test are tabulated on
an accompanying sheet.
The topography of the immediate area where the soils test was conducted, is
generally smooth with a slope of approximately 3-5 per cent to the southwest.
Vegetation consists of scattered dead spruce trees 30 to 40 feet tall (they appear
to have been killed during a forest fire), occasional live spruce trees to 30 feet
tall, scattered groups of alders and willows, and with a ground cover of tall
grasses and some ferns and mosses.
The soils encountered are graphically shown on the accompanying test hole boring
log. The soils consisted of a 0.5 foot thick layer of organics and organic silt
with some sand and gravel overlying essentially a gravelly sand with some silt and
a trace clay. The boring log describes the soils in greater detail. The total depth
of the test hole was 18.5 feet.
A water table was encountered at 14.5 feet during drilling. After removing the augers
from the test hole, standing water was observed and measured to be 14.5 feet from
the ground surface.
An accompanying sketch shows the subject lot with the approximate location of the
test hole in relation to the property lines.
I appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you. Please contact me if you have
any questions regarding this soils investigation.
Very truly yours,
