Septic System Upgrade
To Whom It May Concern:
Attached please find the application and supporting documentation for upgrading the
septic system for the referenced 3 bedroom house. The existing septic system was
installed in 1983 and has failed. The tank has collapsed and the drainfield is
surcharged. It is proposed to install anew 1000 gal. septic tank and 2 shallow trenches
38 ft long each.
The proposed design is based upon a test hole dug on May 14, 2004. Two test holes
were dug, with TH#1 containing an impermeable layer of silt at 7 ft from surface. Water
was encountered at the top of the impermeable layer. Test hole #2 was dug to a total
depth of 13.5 ft and had a small seep of water at 6.5 ft. This water was not evident after
7 days of groundwater monitoring, while test hole #1 had water at 8.75 ft. Percolation
tests were run in both test holes, in the sand and gravel layer. Both had rates of less
than 1 minute per inch, with soil quality sufficient to preclude use of a sand filter. The
soil logs are attached.

The current septic tank will be abandoned in place, and the existing drainfield will be
retained for future use, with a diverter valve installed.
There are no surface waters or private wells within 100 ft of the proposed septic system.
am not aware of any adverse effect that this upgrade would have on any adjacent
properties' water and wastewater treatment needs.
