We’re submitting this permit for the construction of a new 4-bedroom system. The attached site plan identifies the location of the home, water service line, and existing septic locations. No conflicts exist between this proposed system and any other well or septic system , whether on this lot or adjacent lots. The ground surface on the lot is very mild, less than 2% in any direction. On the north end of the property, it slopes slightly to the west, but the area for the existing (and proposed) system is very flat. There are no slopes greater than 25% within 50 feet downslope of either the primary or alternate site. Drainage arrows are shown on the site plan showing the grade and direction of flow. Stormwater drainage will not impact this septic system. The new trench will be constructed parallel to the slope as much as possible. Because of the locations of the home, existing trench, and private water line, we are proposing to excavate the existing trench and rebuild a new trench in its place. We are using the test hole that is in the file for the updated design. All of the neighboring properties are on a community water system. The new system will be more than 5’ away from the septic tank. The alternate site is located more than 6’ away. Please refer to the attached plan and profile pages for the septic design. If this design is followed, there will be no adverse impacts to adjacent properties. The new building will use the same water service connection and a septic system permit has been approved for a replacement septic tank and a new absorption trench. As part of our design, we have logged a new test hole with water monitoring and a percolation rate. While we originally planned on excavating a new trench, we are struggling with achieving required separation distances from the foundation, water line, existing trench, and property line. The existing trench was designed for 3 bedrooms, and the inspection report documents it as 47' long, 2.5' wide, and 6' effective depth, for 564 ft3 of absorption area. The test hole that was dug for the design described the soils in the upper 12' as SM (silty sand), but had a percolation rate of 15 min/in. There was no groundwater down to 17'. During the preliminary installation process, the contractor dug a new test hole near the center of the existing trench. We also found SM soils (silty sand w/ gravel) down to I F, and no groundwater to 18', but we found a perk rate of 1.7 min/in. Beneath that was SM (silty sand) determined by lab sieve analysis. After this new test hole, we dug another perk bench on the other side of Garness' test hole from 2001 and perked those soils as well. We found more soils that perked at 1.7 min/in. While the trench doesn't have 2' of perked receiving soils underneath it, the SM layer that starts at I F below grade is 61 % sand, and as such would qualify to be used as a sand filter. There is no potential negative effect from the 1' separation of the bottom of the trench from this layer. If we took the size of the existing trench, with an averaged application rate of 1.066 GPD/SF, the trench would have the capacity for 601 GPD, enough for 4 bedrooms. We have checked the effluent levels in the trench and it is currently dry. As the test hole and additional perk test provide updated information, and the average perk rate allows for an additional bedroom, we request that this trench be reclassified for a 4 bedroom system.
