Ref: Septic Upgrade Design for TI2N, R3W, SECTION 33; Lot 251
To whom it may concern:
The existing 2 bedroom house is currently served by a private well and septic system. The
existing drainfield is in a state of failure and in need of an upgrade. Per the homeowner's
request, this design includes an optional four bedroom upgrade. Two test holes were excavated
on the southern halfofthe property. The proposed septic system will be designed around the 30
foot radius of test hole #1. We are proposing that a 1250 gallon septic tank and a five foot wide
drainfield be installed. The four bedroom option will require two (2) identical drainfields, see
drawings for details. Comments regarding the proposed design are summarized as follows:
1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring,
and the percolation test results. It is our opinion that due to the overall appearance of the soils, an
application rate of 0.6 gallons/day/ft2 should be used.
2. TRENCll DESIGN:
a. Percolation Rate: 5 and 30 minutes/inch
b. Allowable Application Rate: 0.6 gallons/day/fl2
c. Numbcr ofBcdrooms: 2
d. Design Flow: 300 gallons per day
e. Minimum Absorption Area: 500 ft2
f. Total Depth: 8 feet (max.)
g. Effective Depth: 4 feet
h. Width: 5 feet
i. Reduction Factor: 0.5
i. Minimum Length: 50 feet long
j Effective absorption area = 500 ft2

Ph: (907) 337-6179 * Fax: (907) 338-3246 * Website: akwwc.com
3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed
upgrade.
4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the site plan, the topography within 50 feet of the
proposed septic system is a 10 to 15 percent running from approximately northeast to southwest.
In short, there are no slope concerns. The trench(s) are to be installed parallel to slope contours.
We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic
systems. If you have any questions, please contact us at 337-6179. Thank you for your
assistance.

Mr. and Mrs. John D. Riley
P. O. Box 110512
Anchorage, Alaska 99511
Mr. and Mrs. Riley:
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the findings of:~this investigation, I recommend that two
zones within your old well (72-8-1) be perforated to explore for
additional free water. The lower zone, from 122' to 132' below
ground surface, is interpreted to have the greatest potential
for free water. The zone between 92' and 105' below ground
surface appears to have leas potential for the occurrance of free
water than the lower zone in this well. However, this zone
appears to have s greater potential for the occurrsnce of free
water than the zones that were detected in well 86-1-29.
Four potential water bearing zones have been identified within
your new well (86-1-29). These zones are shown on figure 1. The
four zones are interpreted to be smaller and less prominent th'an
the potential water bearing zones of your older well. Since the
gamma log shows less prominent deflections, this information
suggests that these zones are less likely to produce free water.
For this reason. I recommend that.well 72-8-1 be perforated first
and perforate this well second if water is not available from the
oldest well.
SUMMARY
Natural gamma or gamma-ray logging is the process of measuring
the natural radiation emitted by geologic materials that contain
Potassium 40. Uranlum 238, or Thorium 232 isotopes. Clay. silt.
and rock generally contain these isotopes in the Anchorage area.
By revealing the differences in the radiation intensity, gamma
logs can provide important information on the depth and sequence
oi geologic layers penetrated by cased wells.
Natural Gamma Borehoie Investigation
Natural gamma logging does not detect water behind casing or
within rocks. Gamma logging is used to detect zones that are low
in silt and clay. These zones often have larger pore spaces than
surrounding geologic materials. If the pore spaces are
connected, the geologic materials are said to be permeable. If
free water exists within these permeable zones, perforating the
steel casing will allow the water to become available for use.
Two existing water wells, 72-8-1 and 86-1-29, were logged with a
natural gamma borehole logging device on the 12th of February,
1986. The results are combined with the driller's logs and
summarized in figure 1. Data obtained from the logging was
digitized and enhanced with various computer programs. The final
interpretation was compared with the original data and with
replicate logs.
RESULTS
Four potential water bearing zones have been identified within
your new well (86-1-29) and three zones are interpreted within
the well 72-8-1. The soil and rock associated with each well
appears to correlate with that of the other well.
I trust this report, while not exhaustive of the possibilities,
sufficiently meets your immediate needs. If you have questions in
this matter, please feel welcome to contact my office.
Sincerely,
TERRASAT

On July 17, 1984 an adequacy was performed on the above lot. The
absorption system is a Concrete cesspool with an approximate area of 128
Sqo ft. The system is capable of accepting 300 gallons of water per day.
The'~urge capacity of the system was 900 gallons. Based upon the test
data, the cesspool is acceptable for use as a crib for a 2 bedroom house,
providing a septic tank is added between the house and the present
cesspool.
There is no soils data available for this property°

Re: Lot 251, Section 33, TI2N, R3W
The above referenced lot consists of a 2 bedroorr: single fag'ily residence
served with an individual well and on-site sewage disposal systew. On
8/22/85, the sewer systec'was converted from a cesspool to a crib type
septic systeg with a new 1000 gallon septic tank installed. The sewer
line fro~ the house to the septic tank is # inch cast iron Triton pipe
with water tight bell joints every ten feet. A foundation cleanout is
1.5 feet frc~r the foundation. Another cleanout is approxigately 70 feet
fro~ the foundation and 60 feet before the septic tank.
The well serving this house is located 10.5 feet fro~ the foundation
cleanout. This well was drilled on 8/I/72 and is 200 feet deep and
cased to 148 feet. Bedrock was encountered at 147 feet.
The private sewer line frox the house was installed in its present
location due to the plumbing in the house already being set up for that
location. The only other place the sewer line could exit the house
would be on the southeast side which would entail replurrbing and the
regoval of a very large spruce tree next to the house. The homeowner,
knowing the well and sewer line are too close, and not wanting to do
extensive replu~bing and tree re, oval, chose to have a new well
drilled.
On 2/7/86, a new well was drilled to a depth of 650 feet and cased to
155.8 feet where bedrock was encountered. This new well did not produce
any water. It is a totally dry hole. On 2/14/86, the horreowner had a
grag~a scan done on the two wells. See attached report fro~ Terrasat.
This report shows that the new well has very little potential for
producing water, while the old well has a ~uch better chance. Per
Terrasats report, the homeowner had the old well perforated frcrr 92 feet
to 132 feet. This well now produces a satisfactory arrount of water.
Due to the subsurface conditions found in the new well, any additional
wells could prove to be just as bad. This would also be an extrege
expense for the homeowner.
Fro~ the well log of the 01d well, we see that ther~ is a layer of

In conducting this evaluation, GEG provided an engineering evaluation of the well and/or septic system
in accordance with the guidelines and regulations established by the Municipality of Anchorage and
industry practices. The reported results describe the condition of the system/s on the date/s of the
evaluation. Separation distances were measured to readily identifiable features. Hidden defects or
encroachments may exist that were not identified during the evaluation. The operational life of all wells
and septic systems depend upon a variety of variables, including but not limited to, soil conditions,
groundwater levels (that may fluctuate during the year), quality of construction (materials and
workmanship), and the water usage of the family utilizing the system/s. These conditions can vary, and
are outside the control of GEG. Satisfactory test results do not guarantee future performance of the
sysiem/s; therefore, GEG makes no warranty (express or irnpifed) regarding the future performance of
the well or septic system. GEG makes no representation whether an alternative well or septic system
can be installed on the property in the event either of the current systems fail to perform adequately in
the future. The content of this report is for the sole benefit of the person/party that retained GEG to
perform the evaluation. Reliance upon the information provided in this report by any oth r 'rVW t*
