They flax without breaking when loaded externally from soil weight and vehicular traffic. Rigid pipes, such as those made of concrete or clay, do not perceptibly flet when loaded and experience wall crushing when their load limit is reached. This made of failure for rigid pipes has given rise to the terms'aush strength' and "D -Load'. but these terms do not appy to PVC pipes. When a PVC pipe encounters external loading. Its diameter will begin to deflect. meaning Its sides will move outward and slightly downward. It the pipe is bur- led In supportive soil, the stiffness of the soil will resist the deflection (see Figure 1). This action and reaction Is the key to how a PVC pipe carries external loads. Figure 1 FLEXIBLE PIPE DEFLECTION UNDEFLECTED DEFLECTED FLOOBLEPIPE FLDOBLEPIPE TOTAL LOAD: SOIL. LIVE Sri §§ 8 external loads. By Itself, the pipe may not support much weight, but the soe/pipe system can have tm. mendous bad capacity. A FVC PiPWS resistance to de0ectlen In an unburied state Is measured by [is 'Pipe stiffness'. Pipe stiffness Is Usually less significant than sail stiffness in PVC pipe installations, but in general, a higher pipe stiffness results in a higher load capacity. Soil stiffness is most affected by the level of compac. tion achieved, and to a lesser extent by the soil type. Soil stiffness values I., various conditions and soli types have been derived through extensive testing. CALCULATING ALLOWABLE BURIAL DEPTH Because a PVC pipe flexes rather than breaks when loaded, the failure cdeamn Is not fracture strength. Instead, a limit is placed on pipe diametric deflection. This limit is expressed in terms of percentage reduction in diameter due to external loading. Industry recommen. dations for maximum defection are shown in Table 1. A pipe system designer uses this equation to predict PVC pipe deflection given type of PVC pipe, burial depth, soil density, type of traffic, type of embedments oil, and compaction density of embedment soil. The designer then compares the predicted deflection to there commented maximum deflection in Table 1 to check it the burial depth is appropriate. Example 1: Shallow Burial A pipe system designer is Interested In using ASTM D3034 SDR 35 PVC sews, pipe in a shallow -burial instaladon with the following characteristics: -1 foot burial depth: - 120 pounds per cubic foot soil density - H2O highway traffic - sand embedment material - 90% Proctor density embedment soil compaction %DEFLECTION - 0.1 ("'WI) 100 0.149 (PS) +0.061 EI % DEFLECTION = 0.1(0.83+12.5)100 0.149 (46)+0.061(2,000) %DEFLECTION = 1.0x1% The maximum predicted deflection is 2.0%, well below the maximum recommended for PVC sower pipe in Table 1 of 714%. Minimum Burial Depth: The minimum recommend- ed burial depth for PVC pipes beneath a highway is one foot. This recommendation assumes proper specifi- cation of embedment materials and compaction, antl proper installation. E mple 2: Deep Burial A pl temdesigner is interested 41 using AS M D3034 S 35 PVC sewer pipe in a deep -burial 1 tet- lation with 1 a following characteristics: - 45 foot buff depth - 120 pounds cubic foot soil density - H2O highway tra c (Note: Live loads at egfigible far deep burials) - sand embedment m erial - 90% Proctor density a bedment it compaction %DEFLECTION =0.1 (P W) 100 0.1 )+0.06le %DEFLECTION = .1 7.5+0)100 0 49 (4S 0.061(2,000) %DEFLECTION - 1.°x1% The maximum proof ad collection is 3. well below the maximum me mended forPVC pipe In Table 1 of 715%. All pipe shall have two inch (2") insulation, two feet (2') wide over areas which have less than four (4') of soil cover. 3.4 Pea Gravel Locally available, washed three eighths inch (3/8")pea gravel is suitable for use in the ISF. Material must have 100 % passing the three eighths inch (3/8) sieve, and must have less than 20 percent (20%) passing the one quarter inch (1/4") sieve, and less than one percent (1%) passing the #8 sieve. One quarter inch (1/4") pea gravel with round particles and less than one percent (1%) passing the #8 sieve is an approved substitute. 3.5 ISF Sand An approved source of ISF sand is Central Paving Product's "Winter Road Sand" available at the Palmer yard. Substitutes must have less than two (2%) passing the #100 sieve, less than one percent (1%) passing the #200, and have 100 percent (100°/0) passing the #4 sieve. A coefficient ofuniformity Cu<4 is recommended. 4.0 ENGINEERING INSPECTIONS 4. I The contractor shall coordinate with the engineer at least 24 hours prior to start of construction. 4.2 The engineer will be available during construction of the system to make necessary inspections. PROBABLE IMPACTS TO ADJACENT PROPERTIES A) WELLS The proposed wastewater disposal system is designed in accordance with current Municipal Wastewater Disposal Regulations. The proposed 12 x 30 Intermittent Bottomless Sand Filter is greater than 100 t~. from wells on this and surrounding lots. There is room for a replacement system on this lot. Therefore, there should be no adverse impacts on wells from this system. The construction of absorption system will not preclude construction of systems on adjoining lots. B) WASTEWATER SYSTEMS The system is designed in accordance with current Municipal Regulations, and construction will comply with current regulations. There should be no adverse impact of adjacent disposal systems. C) RESERVED SPACE/SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE There is adequate space on the lot for a replacement disposal system, and still maintain the protective radiuses around wells. The placement of the septic system on this lot should not preclude building replacement systems On adjacent lots. D) DRAINAGE The topography on this lot and the surrounding lots is sloping varying from 5 % to 15 %. The area disturbed during construction of the system will be graded to prevent ponding of water. Construction of this system should not adversely affect drainage.
