There are two s~ptic tanks, one was installed in 1973 with a horizontal separation distance of 89 feet. A second 500 gallon septic tank was installed as a part of an upgrade of the system from three bedrooms to four bedrooms in October 1980. The horizontal separation distance on this tank is 99 feet. There is no well log available for the well on this property drilled in 1973. However, a well log for the well on the adjacent property, drilled in 1979, is provided. The static water level in the existing well on property is approximately 72 feet from the top of the well casing and the well depth is approximately 128 feet. The topography between the well and the on-site disposal system is a +20% in the direction of the well. In accordance with the risk analysis performed by us it would appear that there is no bacteriological pollution possible and for this reason it is our opinion that the horizontal distances prescribed by 18AAC72.021 is not required in this case. Dear Mr. Wade: At the request of your agent, Ms. Margie Lugo, our office conducted a percolation adequacy test on your existing septic system at the above-referenced location during the per/od October 11 & 12, 1980. Your septic aystem is reported to consiet of a 1000-gallon septic tank and a aeepage pit. The septic tank had been pumpted and refilled with fresh water prior to the percolation test. Slnce the 4-bedroom house had been occupied up to the time of the test, a normal degree of saturation within the leach field is assumed. In accordance with the Anchorage Municipal Code, Chapter 15.G5, Waste Water Disposal Regulations, any on-site sewage disposal system "shall have adequate capacity to properly dispose of the maximum daily sewage flow." The maximum daily flow is computed at 75 gaIlons per capita-day (gcpd). Since "the population of dwellings shall be estimated at two persons per sleeping room," the maximum daily sewage flow for your 4-bedroom house is 600 gallons per day (gpd). To test the soil absorption capacity as well as the surge capability of your system, fresh water was added in 50-gallon increments to the seepage pit. The water was obtained from your on-site private well at its maximum sustained rate of about ~ gallon8 per minute (gpm). The liquid levels were monitored closely to detect any backup in the septic system. Mr. Nade October 13, 1980 Page -2- The attached Table of Test Data represents the depths of liquid in the septic tank and seepage pit, and the quan- tities of water added. The septic tank was determined to be 7.3 feet deep (bottom of tank to ground surface) with an initial depth of 3.7 feet in the tank. The seepage pit was measured to be 10.1 feet deep with an initial depth of 5.3 feet. Ground elevation at the septic tank standpipe is approximately 2 to 3 feet above the seepage pit standpipe. The attached Summary of Test Results indicates that the liquid level in the seepage pit at the beginning of testing on Day 2 fell to its initiai static level on Day 1, during a recovery period of 24 hours. The test was terminated with the introduction of 234 gallons of water due to the seepage pit filling twice. Based on this testing, an average percolation rate for your existing septic system of at lest 230 gpd is indicated. Since an on-site sewage disposal system for a 4-bedroom dwelling must be capable of disposing of 600 gallons of sewage per day, your septic system does not appear to be functioning satisfactorily at this time. Many factors affect the operation of a soil absorption type of sewage disposal system. Soil type, groundwater depth, age and history of maintenance of the system, and types of waste are a few. This test has been performed in an attempt to determine actual soil absorption capabilities of your septic system under normal useage by considering the degree of saturation of the leach field and surge loads that might be imposed on the system. This test can only evaluate appar- ent performance at a given point in time, and cannot deter- mine either the condition of the leach field, seepage pit or other components of the septic system, or the depth of the water table; We appreciate the opportunity given to perform this adequacy test.
