To whom it may concern: The subject property is served by private well, and a private septic system. As part of this project the well is going to be abandoned, and the house connected to AWWU water. The existing crib/trench will not pass an adequacy test and needs to be upgraded prior to the sale of the house. Comments regarding the proposed upgrade are summarized as follows: 1. Soils: The test hole revealed that the soils were primarily GM/ SM soils overlaid with 2 feet of insitu gravel and 3 feet of fill. The percolation rate of the GM/SM1l soil was determined to be 25 minutes/inch. The overlying gravel soil was not tested, but visually appeared to be less than 5 minutes per inch, and probably faster than 1 minute per inch. I did not consider the increased permeability of the gravel soil layer in my design. 2. Trench Design: a. Percolation Rate: 25 minutesrnch b. Application Rate: .6 gallons/day/ft2 c. Number of Bedrooms: 4 d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 1000 ft2 f. System Type: deep trench g. Effective Depth: 8 feet h. Width: 2 feet minimum. i. Length: 62.5 feet minimum i. Pressure Distribution: 1.5 inch diameter PVC, 1/4 inch dia holes, at 5 feet on center. 3. Surface Waters: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic upgrade. . 4. Slopes: The lot slopes downhill from north to south at approximately 2% grade, and from east to west at approximately the same grade. In short, the lot is relatively flat. There is a retaining wall which runs along the south property line. The ground drops approximately 3.5 feet, to the south of this wall. The top of the drainrock in the new trench is approximately 2 feet higher in elevation than the ground at the base of the retaining wall. The slope from the top of the drainrock in the new trench, to the base of the retaining wall, is approximately 6 percent. The separation distance is approximately 32 feet. This should not pose any potential problem. 5. Lot line Waiver: Because of the limited space available, I am proposing to put the new trench within 2 feet of the north and east property lines. This will maximize the separation distance from the old trench to the new trench, and will also keep some separation between the test hole site and the new trench. By throwing excavated dirt to the north side of the property line, when excavating the east/west segment of the trench, ideally, we can maintain a path for hauling drainrock to the north/south trench segment. Regardless of how we do it, things are going to be a little bit cramped. 6.. Old Septic Tank will be Abandoned Under the Existing Deck: See notes on the site plan regarding the proposed abandonment of the septic tank. I don't see any other viable options, but am open to your suggestions. 7. General: Due to limitations in the test hole depth, the limited space to stockpile soil during excavation, and the required absorption area, it was not feasible to utilize gravity flow to the new trench. Furthermore, better soils were encountered at higher elevations. The S.T.E.P tank will be equipped with 2 outlets, and will be piped so that flow can be alternated between the new and the old trenches. I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems.
