Box 196650 4700 South Bragraw Street Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Reft Septic System Upgrade for Lot 29A; NW ¼, Section 9, TISN, RIW (Bottomless Intermittent Sand Filter - ISF) To whom it may concern: The existing 2 bedroom house is served by a class "C" well and a private septic system. The septic system consists of a 750 gallon septic tank, a culvert type lift station and a pressurized, mounded bed type drainfield. The existing drainfield is surcharged and must be upgraded. We are proposing that a 1250 gallon S.T.E.P. tank with dual outlets be installed and; the existing septic tank and lift station be completely abandoned. We are also proposing that an Innovative Bottomless Intermittent Sand Filter (ISF) system be installed. Comments regarding the proposed upgrade are summarized as follows: 1. GENERAL: As seen on the attached site plan and design drawings there is a limited area to install a septic system upgrade. Given the presences of shallow groundwater and the limited area, it is our opinion that a Bottomless ISF system is the most viable option. 2. SOILS: Attached is a soils log that shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. It is our opinion that an application rate of 2.0 gallons/day/ft2 should be used for the bottomless ISF system. 3. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: Bottomless Intermittent Sand Filter (ISF) a. Percolation Rate: <1 minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate for ISF: 2.0 gallons/day/ft2 c. Number ofBedrooms: 2 d. We are proposing to excavate down to a depth of 1.5 feet deep (maximum), place a minimum of 6 inches of sand, install the air supply line, and cover it with 18 inches of sand. On top of the sand, we will place 6 inches (minimum) of 3/8 inch pea gravel, with the pressure laterals midway in the layer. We will use a conventional lift station (Anchorage Tank), equipped with a programmable timer so that flow can be intermittently dosed to the ISF. 4. TOPOGRAPtlY: The area is generally flat in the area for the proposed upgrade; in short, there are no slope concerns. 5. LOT LINE WAIVER REQUEST: We request that a 9 foot lot line waiver be granted from the west/northwest property line to the proposed bottomless ISF. Wc are unaware of any adverse that this waiver would have on the adjacent property. 6. SURFACE WATER: There are no surface water concerns within 100 feet of the proposed septic upgrade. 7. MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES: The materials used, and the construction practices will comply with the M.O.A. "Intermittent Sand Filter Design, Installation & Maintenance Manual". The contractor should read this document prior to construction. Copies are available at the Municipal Onsite Services office (4700 South Bragaw Stree0. 8. CLOSING: I am open to any suggestions from your department, which would be an improvement to the proposed design. The septic tank was pumped and verified to have a capacity of 750 gallons. The seepage pit was charged with approximately 900 gallons of water and after a period of 24 hours aT1 of the water added had percolated out of the seepage pit. It can be concluded from the test that the septic system is adequate for the two bedroom residence located on this property. It should be noted that the syphon pipe on the septic tank is in need of repair. The perspective buyer agreed, in my presence~ to repair this pipe and add a cap to both the syphon pipe on the septic tank and on the seepage pit° It should also be noted that the seepage pit is located on the roadway easement adjoining th~s property. Since the system was in- stalled and improved by the greater Anchorage Area Borough on April 30, 1970 it is assumed that this location was approved at the time of installat]Ono If we may be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call.
