1. The attached approved design.
2. All requirements specified in Anchorage Municipal code Chapters 15.55 and 15.65 and the State of Alaska
Wastewater Disposal Regulations (18AAC72) and Drinking Water Regulations (18AAC80)
3. The wastewater code requires inspections during the installation. The engineer shall notify the Development
Services Department per AMC 15.65. Provide notification by calling (907) 343-7904 (24/7).
4. From October 15 to April 15, a subsurface soil absorption system under construction during freezing weather
shall be either:
a. Opened and Closed on the same day, or
b. Covered, sealed, and heated to prevent freezing
Special Provisions: The water line alignment is to be confirmed prior to field install to maintain separation from
field to water line.

SPECIFICATIONS & DESIGN GUIDELINES
Wastewater System Sizing: This is an existing 4-bedroom, single family home. A new
STEP tank/Trench is currently planned; existing tanks will be decommissioned per UPC.
Neighbor lots are served by septic systems and public water; there are no conflicts. The
topography slopes from south to north as depicted in drawing. A soil test reveals SM w/
Gravel, no groundwater encountered. An application rate of 0.8 GPD/FTZ will be used for
the trench. Trench Length = 750 FTz/2 x 7' = 54' trench, 2.5' wide, 7' effective depth.
10' total depth. Water Line is shown in blue.
Specification Requirements: All components and work must comply with the
Municipality of Anchorage Specifications (AMC) & State of Alaska Drinking Water
Regulations and Wastewater Regulations.
• New 1500 Gallon STEP tank. MOA-Approved.
• 5' minimum between the tank and trench. 10' minimum to property lines tank/trench.
• 4' of cover and insulation is required for force main; 2" Minimum thickness for
insulation.
• Tank & solid pipe must be set on well compacted, stable soil.
• 4 inch diameter cleanouts with airtight caps are required 1 ' to 4' from foundation
wall, prior to any 90 degree bend in 4 inch line.
• All cleanouts must extend to at least ground level.
• In solid pipe runs, ASTM D-3034 may be used in lieu of cast iron.
• Bed to be placed level, minimum of 4' to groundwater, 6' to bedrock.
• Drain rock to be '/2" to 2 ''/z" screened. Drain rock to be distributed uniformly.
• Force main to be 1.25" Schedule 40 PVC or equal.
• Distribution pipe to be 1.25" Schedule 40 PVC w/ 1/8" orifice @ 24" on -center.
• Silt barrier (filter fabric) to be installed above the drain rock.
• Smeared bed must be raked or scarified before drain rock placement.
• The finish grade must be mounded to promote drainage away from trench.
• Insulation must be placed over any pipe installed under driveways or parking areas.
• Approved pipe materials include cast iron, PVC ASTM D3034, PVC ASTM F789,
ABS ASTM D2661,
• Sewer Service Line is minimum 2% slope.
• Septic Tank to be pumped every two years or when required.

The owner desires to upgrade the septic system. The existing trench is close to failure.
The best site for a new trench is as indicated in the Plan submittal. Due to the 7' effective depth,
The required separation between old and new trench is twice the effective depth or 14' The
actual separation for a small portion between the two trenches is 12.5'
The general "rule of thumb" distance between absorption fields is 10' The general idea is not to
destabilize the soil between the two fields, or allow for water transmission.
The silty nature of this soil should preclude any water transmission between trenches. The
stability of the soil should not be compromised; the existing trench has been in place many years
and is very stable. The general slope is from south to north, which is mirrored by general
drainage direction. The test hole was completely dry after monitoring. Effluent from the existing
trench was not evident. The existing 11 ' deep trench trench meets vertical separation to
groundwater; the 16' test hole had no observed groundwater and was monitored in the high water
period.
The new trench total depth is only 10', but requires the 14' separation due to the 7' effective
depth. The old trench depth is 11 ', with an effective depth of 4', so a code -required separation
from this old trench is only 10'
So due to code, an 11' deep trench only requires a 10' separation, while this new 10' deep
trench requires a 14' separation.
A waiver should be justified in this case.

I have completed a review of this office's ill(is concerning the monitoring status of the
above-referenced Class "A" Public Water System and found the following:
The last satisfactory Total Coliform Bacteria Sample results was submitted
to thls Department on June 11, 1993. This does meet the provisions of 18
AAC 80.200(a) of the State Drinking Water Regulations.
The last Inorganic Chemical Contaminants sample results were submitted
to this Department on February 19, 1993. This does meet the provisions
of 18 AAC 80.200(a) State Drinking Water Regulations.
The last Radioactive Contaminants Sample results were submitted to the
Department on January 28, 1993. This does meet the provisions of 18 AAC
80.200(a), State Drinking Water Regulations.
The last Organic Chemical Contaminants/Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC)
were submitted to this Department on February 19, 1993. Based on
analysis of the previous VOC samples results have been satisfactory. This
does meet the provisions of 18 AAC 80.200(a), State Drinking Water
Regulations.
Issuance of this letter does cot imply that the above-referenced Class "A" Public Water
System is in compliance with other provisions of the State Drinking Water Regulations.
Unless otherwise noted, this letter is valid for 30 days and is for the specified legal

Legal Description: Lot 30A, Eagle River Valley Ranchettes
Date of Test: July 20, 1993
Septic Tank: 1000 gallon, 1 Compartment, concrete tank 500 gallon, 1, compartment, steel tank
Absorption System: 95' long x 2%' wide x 4' effective depth trench
Soils Rating: 190 sq. ft. per bedroom
Requirements: 4 BR - 600 gallons per day
Test:
Water was pumped into the absorption trench while measuring volume,
time and liquid level rise. After pumping was stopped, the liquid level
drop was measured at timed intervals.
The results were plotted on a graph of time and gallons absorbed,
and extrapolated to 24 hrs.
Results:
The absorption system is currently functioning adequately for a
4 bedroom home.
