Box 196650, Anchorage, Ak 99519-6650 (907)343-7904 Ref: Deficiencies for Birch Hills S/D; Block 1, Lot 6. To whom it may concern: GEG, Ltd. was recently retained to do the C.O.S.A. inspections for the subject property. The septic system consists of a 1000 gallon concrete septic tank and a concrete crib type drainfield. During the course of our inspections, several deficiencies were noted. (Note: All noted deficiencies have been addressed previously) • FOUNDATION CLEANOUT: A foundation cleagqout is not shown on the original inspection report. All prior HAA's issued for this property noted that there was no foundation cleanout. The owner retained One Stop Services to remove the toilet downstairs and camera the sewer line to verify direct access to the septic tank. One Stop Services did so on 7/9/2012 and verified that the plumbing serves as an access point to remove any blockages between the house and the tank (see attached documentation). • DISTANCE FROM TANK TO FOUNDATION: Due to the unknown dimensions of the concrete septic tank, previous HAA's have left the distance listed as 'unknown'. While One Stop Services was performing their work for the homeowner, they located the inlet of the tank and marked the location on the ground surface. GEG Ltd, inspected it shortly thereafter. The tank inlet marking is over 8 feet from the foundation. The results of the field investigation and adequacy tests are summarized as follows: A. WELL: The static water level on 9/6/97 was 40' BTC. Water was pumped from the well at an average rate of 4.87 gpm for a total of 186 minutes (905 gallons). During the initial 10 minutes of the pumping period the water level dropped 8', to 48' BTC. The level remained at that level throughout the rest of the test, indicating that it was recharging as fast as the water was being pumped out. In short, the well will continuously produce at least 4.87 gpm. Based upon this data, it can be concluded that the capacity of the well exceeds the Municipal requirements for a 3 bedroom house (.31 gallons per minute), and will continuously produce greater than 3 gallons per minute (as required for FHA financing). B. SEPARATION DISTANCE SEPTIC TANK: The existing septic tank was installed in September of 1974. According to the M.O.A records, it is 1000 gallons, has one compartment, and is made of concrete. Per the M.O.A inspection report, the clean-out appears to be some where past the mid point of the tank (closer to outlet end). Whether this is the case or not is uncertain. The well was not in at the time the tank was installed. Based upon our field measurements, it is 102 feet from the well to the septic tank clean-out. Since it is unknown where the clean-out is on the tank, it is not possible to verify that it is 100 feet from the tank to the well.. C. SEPTIC SYSTEM ADEQUACY TEST: The drainfield is a concrete ring seepage pit, that has an absorption area of 240 square feet. The crib was dry prior to the start of the test. Nine -hundred & five gallons of water was introduced over a period of 186 minutes, which caused the liquid to rise to the 9 inch level. Eight minutes later the JVg�#X } 44ciR" indicating an ENVIRONMENT/LL SERVICES DIVISION SEP 16 1997 RECEIVED absorption of 150 gallons. Based upon this data, it was determined that the absorption rate of the drain6eld exceeds 450 gallons per day, as required for a 3 bedroom house. NOTE: The adequacy of a septic system is influenced by numerous factors, including, but not limited to, seasonal surface water infiltration, grornuhvater variations, septic system maintenance (frequency of septic tank pumping, usage of biological additives), condition of drain pipe and pipe joints (which can be damaged by seismic activity and deteriorate with age), type of substances deposited in septic system (cigarette butts, sanitary napkins, misc. objects), and the amount of water being introduced on a continual basis. Consequently, the results of this adequacy test are only valid for the specific day of the test. The original soil log shows GW rated at 100 square feet per bedroom. This would require 300 square feet of area for the 3 bedroom home making the system 60 square feet shy. On 10/2/87, a soil test was done to verify the rating. Referring to the attached soil log, GW was encountered to 12 feet, which is 4 feet below the crib, and a sieve analysis and perc test was performed. The soil is rated at 85 square feet Der bedroom which would require 255 square feet of prea making the crib only 15 square feet shy. On 9/3/87, an adequacy test was performed. Refer to attached data sheets. The crib was dry at the start of the test. Drawdown data shows the bottom 1 foot of the crib is capable of absorbing approximately 830 gallons per day. The crib is also located under the driveway directly in front of a separate garage building. The ton of the crib is approximately 2 - 2.5 feet below the surface. On 10/12/87. 4 to 6 inches of insulation was installed over the crib and inspected by me. An area 12 x 15 feet was insulated which covers all of the 30 x 30 crib and the solid piping that is under the driveway. We request that you approve the crib for 3 bedroom capacity.
