Box 111073 Anchorage, AK 99511 Subject: Lot 1, Block 1, Sunny Subdivision Well and Septic System Inspection, Testing and Certification Dear Jay: At your request we inspected the well and septic system on the subject lot to determine they met the requirements for certification by the City. Prior to the inspection we inspected the Municipal records and found the septic system was originally constructed in 1990 and was composed of a 1,250 gallon septic tank and a 48' long by 24' wide shallow absorption bed. The well was also constructed the same year and is 120' in depth with 6" steel casing the entire depth. The absorption bed was originally constructed above ground with several feet of sand imported to provide leveling and sufficient separation from groundwater. A survey of the cleanouts indicated they were 1" to 5" out of level. We also noted the monitor tube extended the full depth of the imported sand fill to approximately 1.5' below the actual bottom of the bed. Our measurements indicated 21.5" of standing water, which indicates the water is approximately 2.25" below the lowest cleanout. We injected 1,084 gallons of water into the bed and the water elevation rose to 23". The water was absorbed into the bed at a constant rate and returned to the original level after 24 hours. We conclude from this test the bed is capable of absorbing more than the required 600 gallons of water per day and meets Municipal requirements for certification. It must be noted the septic system even though it is functioning adequately at this time is more than 10 years old and nearing the average life of a typical absorption system. The static water level in the well was originally measured at 10' below the ground surface. Water was allowed to run freely from the well through a hose bib and through a 5/8" hose. with a volumeter. Flow was measured at an average rate of slightly more than 4 gallons per minute with the static water level in the well dropping to 77'. Once flow from the well was stopped the static water level returned to its original level in an hour. The well is therefore capable of producing in excess of the required 600 gallons per day. A sample from the water system was found to be free of coliform and other bacteria with only a trace of nitrate content. The well and water are therefore eligible for Municipal certification.
