Two test holes were excavated south of the existing drainfield. The drainfield will be designed around the 30 foot radii of these test holes. We are proposing that a 1250 gallon septic tank and dual 5 -wide type drainfield be installed. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. It is our opinion that an application rate of 0.8 gallons/day/ft2 should be used. 2. TRENCH DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: 7.9 & 12.6 minutes/inch b. Proposed Application Rate: 0.8 gallons/day/ft2 c. Number of Bedrooms: 4 d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 750 ft2 f. Total Depth: 7 feet (max.) g. Effective Depth: 4 h. Width: 5 feet i. Reduction Factor: 0.5 j. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed design. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: The area for the proposed septic system is a 10%-15% slope running approximately east to west. There is a cutbank that runs along the south/ southwest property line that ranges from 4 to 10 feet. We request a 35 feet waiver from the cutbank to the proposed drainfield. Given the porosity of the soils, there should be little risk with the granting of this waiver. We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. Box 19-6650 Anchorage, AK 99519 Dear Sirs: By means of this letter we are requesting issuance of a separation distance waiver allowing the existing septic tank on Lot 3, Block 3, Contour Acres #3, located at 5101 Vaquero Road, to remain 94 feet away from the private well on the same lot, instead of the normally required 100 feet. A site plan and copies of other relevant backup documents are enclosed to assist you in your review of this waiver request. We were unable to locate a driller's log for this well, but other documents on file at DHHS indicate that the well was completed prior to August of 1974 and that it has a total depth of 346 feet. Logs of three nearby wells with similar characteristics are enclosed. The log for Lot 4, Block 3, located immediately to the north of the subject lot was used for our waiver analysis purposes. On July 28 we conducted a yield test of the well. At the start of our test the static water level stood at 178 feet below ground level. Steady pumping of 743 gallons of water from the well at an average pump output of 4.6 gpm caused the water level to be gradually drawn down to 312 feet. After the pump was turned off the water level inside the well recovered 28 feet in 12 minutes; this translates into a recovery rate of 3.5 gpm which is more than adequate for any single family residence. Water samples collected on July 28 were satisfactory, showing 0 colonies of coliform or other bacteria per 100 ml., and 0.54 mg/l of nitrate -N. The original wastewater disposal system was installed in August of 1974 and consisted of a 1250 gallon concrete septic tank followed by a concrete ring seepage pit with 1026 square feet of absorption area. According to an affidavit on file at DHHS, a new 1250 gallon septic tank was installed in May of 1984 (apparently in conjunction with a driveway expansion project). The affidavit states that Caulder couplings were used on the inlet and outlet of the tank. Our measurements show the cleanout for this tank to be approximately 97 feet from the well. This waiver request of 94 feet is to allow for underground projection of the tank closer to the well. In July of 1985 the original seepage pit was abandoned and replaced with a 32' wide x 61' long soil absorption bed with 1952 square feet of absorption area. To assess the adequacy of the system, on July 28 we added measured quantities of water through the cleanout downstream of the septic tank while monitoring fluid levels in the septic tank and absorption bed standpipes before, during and after the flow of water was stopped. The initial fluid depths in the bed monitor tubes were 7" and 9", and the addition of 743 gallons of water to the system caused these fluid depths to increase by another 13/4". After the flow of water was stopped the fluid level receded 3/16" in 130 minutes, which corresponds to an average rate of 750 gallons per day. Based on this performance, we concluded that the system continues to accept water at an adequate rate for a 4 bedroom residence. As with any adequacy test, this test quantified the performance on the date it was done, and satisfactory test results do not guarantee future performance under different conditions. As indicated on the site plan, the house is situated on a low knoll, with the topography sloping gently downwards, primarily towards the north and west. Should the septic tank leak, effluent would not flow towards the well. According to the 5/23/85 and 7/16/85 AECS soil logs located in the vicinity of the septic tank, the soil down to 20 feet below ground level is a tan silt with a measured percolation rate of slower than 60 minutes per inch. The presence of this type of soil will provide an effective barrier preventing effluent from a leaking septic tank from making its way down through the soil column to contaminate the well. The well log for Lot 4, Block 3, shows 64 feet of sandy material and 97 feet of silty material for the zone between the bottom of the septic tank at 17 feet below ground level and the static water level at 178 feet below ground level. In addition to the significant vertical distance through which effluent must pass, these will provide an effective barrier to downwards migration of contaminants. The following is a breakdown of how waiver analysis points could be assigned in accordance with DEC's 1985 "Separation Distance Waiver Guidelines for SCRO".
