Observe groundwater accumulation in groundwater monitoring tube installed on 10/25/02. PRIMARY CONTACTS DURING THE SITE VISIT 1. Mr. Michael Foster, Homeowner MICHAEL L. FOSTER & ASSOCIATES 1. Mr. Gordon Seversen, P.E., Senior Engineer Z'! FINDINGS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS A groundwater monitoring tube was installed at 8:45 am on Friday, October 25 at a location shown on the as -built site plan. The perforated section was installed at 9.0 feet below existing grade where bedrock was encountered. I observed the installation and found it acceptable. On Friday, November I at 3:30 pm, I measured the tube for groundwater level: No groundwater was observed. A 2-inch layer of mud was found at the base of the tube. I advised Mr. Foster to cover the monitoring tube at his convenience. RECOMMENDATIONS AND/OR CONCLUSIONS After seven days of observance, there was no evidence of groundwater accumulation in the monitoring tube at Mr. Foster's drainfield area. The Engineer may, at any time, reject fill material determined to contain excess amounts of organics, silt or ice. 2.02 GENERAL FILL A. General fill shall consist of non -contaminated locally excavated sands, silty sands, and silts containing not more than 10 percent by weight non -plastic fines passing a No. 200 sieve, 15 percent water content by weight, and shall be free of organics, snow, ice, or other debris. The Engineer will determine which materials are suitable for construction, and shall identify unusable excavated materials for disposal. Michael and Phillis Foster 02315-2 October 2002 F. Unusable excavated material shall be disposed of as directed by the Engineer. 3.03 PLACEMENT AND COMPACTION A. Place all materials to the lines and grades shown on the Drawings or as directed by the Engineer. B. Avoid damage to liners and buried pipe from movement of equipment. Replace or repair materials that are displaced or damaged at Contractor's expense. C. Grade, bulldoze, or otherwise spread the materials in lift thicknesses not greater than those given below (E & F) and in a manner that will provide a dense well -graded distribution of the various particle sizes. Zones of segregated particle sizes shall be reworked to the approval of the Engineer. D. Compact each material to the specified percentage of compaction or greater as determined in accordance with ASTM D1557 (lab density), and D2922 (in-place density), and/or D1556 (sand cone method). E. General Fill 1. In areas under road berms, general fill material shall be placed in horizontal lifts having a maximum loose lift thickness of 12 inches unless otherwise directed by the Engineer. 2. Compact each layer to at least 90 percent of maximum dry density or to the "Maximum Attainable Density" as determined by the Engineer. 3. "Maximum Attainable Density" (Part 3.03) shall only be used with the approval of the Engineer. F. Completed installations as shown on the Drawings shall be approved by the Engineer prior to backfilling. G. Backfill trench in a manner that does not damage piping or structures. Damaged piping or structures shall be repaired or replaced as approved by the Engineer. H. Backfill in areas not under road berms shall be placed in horizontal lifts having a maximum loose thickness of 2 feet and compacted by tamping with a backhoe bucket or compactor as approved by the Engineer 3.03 DETERMINATION OF MAXIMUM ATTAINABLE DENSITY A. The "Maximum Attainable Density" will be determined by the Engineer based on moisture and density tests results as measured during construction of a test fill. Michael and Phillis Foster 02315-3 October 2002 B. Conduct the test fill be placing short sections of fill having lift thicknesses as indicated by the Engineer. Test sections shall be the minimum length and width that can be effectively placed with the equipment in use. C. The Engineer shall test the moisture content and density after each pass of the compaction equipment on each section of fill. The Engineer shall then establish the "Maximum Attainable Density" and the corresponding lift thickness. D. Do not use the test fill as a part of construction unless it is reworked and meets the project Specifications. E. The Engineer may establish a new "Maximum Attainable Density" and lift thickness if the fill properties, moisture content, or placement temperature have changed sufficiently to significantly alter the density that can be achieved. Perform sampling and testing to confirm that the materials and construction are in accordance with the Drawings and Specifications. Provide testing results to the Engineer for approval. B. Areas which fail to meet the specified moisture and density requirements will be rejected and shall be retested after additional compactive effort is performed. C. If, after additional compactive effort, the rejected area is still unacceptable, it may be necessary to reduce the lift thickness and remove or replace some portion of the fill. D. Each layer must be approved by the Engineer or Inspector prior to placement of subsequent lifts or other materials. Repair or replace materials that are displaced or damaged at Contractor's expense. 3.05 TRENCHING FOR SEWERS AND STORM DRAINS A. In all cases trenches must be sufficient width to permit proper jointing of the pipe and backfilling of material along the sides of the pipe. Trench width at the surface of the ground shall be kept to the minimum amount necessary to install the pipe in a safe manner, ordinarily accomplished by sloping the trench sides to the angle of repose of the material encountered. Trenches wider than the maximum specified may result in a greater load of overburden than the pipe is designed for, and consequently, if the maximum trench width is exceeded by the Contractor; he shall at his own expense, provide pipe of high strength classification, or provide a higher class of bedding where necessary to assure that the pipe will not be overloaded, at no additional cost to the Owner unless directed by the Engineer. B. The length of trench excavated in advance of the pipe laying shall be kept to a minimum, and in no case shall it exceed 150 feet unless specifically authorized by the Engineer. E. Unless otherwise specified, the trenches shall be excavated below the barrel of the pipe a sufficient distance to provide for bedding material specified. Care shall be taken not to overexcavate unless authorized by the Engineer. Unauthorized overexcavation shall be backfilled with foundation gravel and compacted, and may be at the Contractor's expense if due to Contractor's actions solely under his control. 3.06 PIPE FOUNDATIONS A. Where the trench bottom is in a material unsuitable for the pipe foundation as determined by the Engineer, excavation shall continue to an additional depth as may be required by the Engineer. The unsuitable material shall be removed and a stable foundation approved by the Engineer shall be provided. B. Proper preparation of pipe foundation and placement of foundation material where required shall precede the installation of all pipe. B. Contractor shall take necessary precautions to protect the pipe from any damage, movement or shifting. In general, backfill material shall be placed by pushing the material from the end of the trench into, along and directly over the pipe so that the material will be applied in the form of a rolling slope rather than by side filling which may damage the pipe. Backfilling from the sides of the trench will be permitted only after sufficient material has first been carefully placed over the pipe to such a depth to protect the pipe. C. Pipe placed below the water table shall be kept from floating by maintaining the water level at the bottom of the trench. Dewatering of the trench shall be continued until the trench is completely backfilled. 3.09 COMPACTION REQUIREMENTS A. Foundation Material: 12 -inch lifts, maximum, compacted to 95 percent of maximum density. B. Bedding Material: 6 -inch lifts compacted to 95 percent of maximum density. All excess excavated material shall be properly disposed of by the Contractor. C. Gravel Resurfacing: Where regraveling is required after crossing of an existing road or driveway, the Contractor shall remove existing gravel surfacing, stockpile the material, and restore the road surface after installation of the pipe. The stockpiled material may be used for backfilling to within 2 inches of finished level. The final 2 inches of gravel surfacing shall conform to the following.
