Ref: Proposed Septic System Upgrade for Alpine Terrace; Block 1, Lot 1
To whom it may concern:
The existing 4 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The drainfield is in a state of
failure and needs to be upgraded. We are proposing to install a new 1500 gallon STEP tank and deep
trench type drainfield. The existing septic tank will be decommissioned and the existing drainfield will be
connected to with a diverter valve for potential future use. One testhole was excavated on the property
and the drainfield is designed around its 30 foot radius. Comments regarding the design are summarized
as follows:
1. SOILS: See the attached 2016 logs which show the soil classifications and groundwater monitoring
and percolation test results.
2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications.
3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface water concerns.
4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing, the average topography around the
proposed drainfield is 5-10%. There are slopes >25% on the property. However, they are more than 50
feet from the proposed drainfield.
5. WAIVER: We are requesting that your department issue a variance for the required five (5) foot
separation distance from a drainfield to a test hole.The test hole was backfilled with native soil, which was
uniform throughout the testhole depth. Any "loose' material in the testhole area of the trench will be
excavated out, which may result in a localized portion of the trench that is wider than 2.5 -3.0 feet.
We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation or waivers would have on adjacent wells or

Approval (HAA) based only upon the representations given in paragraph 5 by an independent professional civil
engineer registered in the State of Alaska. Certificates of Health Authority Approval are required for the transfer of
title (except between spouses) for properties served by a single family on-site wastewater disposal and/or water
supply system. DSD also issues HAAs upon request to homeowners. Certificates of Health Authority Approval are
valid for 90 days from the date of issue for properties served by a private or Class C well and may be reissued with
new water sample results less than 30 days old. (Certificates may be reissued for a period of up to one year with
valid water samples.) Certificates are valid for one year for properties served by Class A or B wells or a public
water system. The Municipality of Anchorage is not responsible for errors or omissions in the professional
engineer's work.
