Pit well decommissioning
Dear Onsite Services Engineer:
The approved permit for the septic system on Lot 49A of the Helluva Subdivision makes
note of a shallow well within the area of the septic trench. The well is described as being
'cased down to 20 feet'. I understand that this well was also mentioned on the permit for
the neighboring lot as requiring decommissioning.
I have been to the site to inspect this well. It is not an actual well- it is a shallow, open
pit inside a small concrete 'bunker' partially buried in the ground. There is no casing,
simply a concrete cover on the pit that needs to be removed in order to get access to
the well.
Although the bunker has not been demolished, this pit has been filled in with soil, so
that there is no access to water, and no surface water. For all intents and purposes the
'well' has been decommissioned.

Septic System Design and Permit Application
Impacts to Adjacent Properties
Dear Onsite Services Engineer
The owner of Lot 49A, Helluva Subdivision intends to construct a new four-bedroom
home on the lot. We are therefore requesting a permit be issued for the construction of
a new well and septic system to accommodate the home. The attached Site Plan and
backup documentation identify the location and configuration of the proposed well and
septic system along with the alternate site. No existing wells are closer than 100' from
the proposed septic system. Drainage arrows are shown on the site plan showing the
grade and direction of flow on the lot along with ground surface contours. No slopes in
the area of the proposed septic system exceed 25%. The drainage pattern will not be
changed as a result of this project.
A shallow (approximately 20') well point was found on the lot which is no longer in
service. It will be decommissioned in accordance with Municipal Code and a
decommissioning report will be filed.
The test holes placed on the tract in the area of the absorption trench and alternate site
indicated silty with gravel (SM) material. The percolation rate of the soil was
determined to be 1 to 5 minutes per inch. No groundwater was found during the
placement of the test holes and none was noted during the monitoring period. An
application rate of 1.2 gallons per day per square foot was used in the design of the
absorption system. We are proposing to place a new 1,250 -gallon septic tank and a 50'
long by 5' wide by 4' effective depth absorption trench to treat and dispose of the
effluent generated in the house. The elevation of the distribution line in the absorption
trench will be 4' below the surface and the total depth will be 8'. A minimum of 3' of fill
or 2" of insulation and 2' of fill will be placed over the absorption trench and 4' over the
septic tank.

southeast to the northwest at shallow grades. The new bed will be constructed parallel
with the contours of the slope as much as possible in conformance with Municipal
requirements. The new septic system will be constructed a minimum of 100' from all
wells and any surface water and 10' from the proposed and existing water services in
the area.
If the system is constructed in accordance with our design the following statements
apply:
The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on the wells
in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
2. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on existing
septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future.
3. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on reserve
space, either surface or subsurface, on any lots located in the area.
4. The system, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on drainage
patterns in the area. The current drainage pattern will be maintained.

Dear Onsite Services Engineer:
During the preparation for the construction of the septic system on this lot, the excavator
noticed that the well had been placed too closely to the proposed septic system,
necessitating that the trench be moved to the west. This put a portion of the trench
outside the perk area for the existing test hole, so we performed a new perk test to
cover the far side. That perk test resulted in a percolation rate that was too fast.
According to municipal code, a sand liner would be required for this system.
We took a sample and had a gradation test performed, which showed that the sand
content is greater than 50% with less than 1% fines. We request that this in-situ soil be
approved in lieu of building a liner from imported sand. We have recalculated the trench
length with an application rate of 1.0 GPD/SF, instead of the 1.2 for a perk rate of 1-
5min/in.
In addition, the excavator checked the monitoring tubes and found groundwater at 11'.
The existing test hole record showed no groundwater down to 16', verified in May of
2016. The change in groundwater level is likely due to the vast difference in snowfall
and precipitation between this year and the 2 years previous. We therefore redesigned
the trench for seasonal high groundwater level of 9'. These two changes resulted in a
trench 5' wide, 84' long, with a 2' effective depth, 5' total depth. We appreciate your
review of this.
